Apple finally allows free virtualization, coming in OS X Lion

aaaaaThe guys at Mac Rumors bring us some good news. Where as previous versions of the OS only allowed virtualization via an expensive Server license, Lion will bring this feature for free. Many people use virtualization to access their workstations at the office from home, but because it was a paid only feature before, this was a reason to to smile for PC users. Not any more.

aaaaaIn the new OS X Lion, users will be able to run up to two virtual copies on a single Mac, using tools like VMWare or Parallels. This first came to light in the recent EULA (end user license agreement) release to developers.

aaaaaFrom the 10.7 (Lion) EULA:

aaaaa(iii) to install, use and run up to two (2) additional copies or instances of the Apple Software within virtual operating system environments on each Mac Computer you own or control that is already running the Apple Software.

aaaaaWe wonder what this will mean for those poor souls who had already bought a Server license, because it will become somewhat worthless now.

aaaaaOS X Lion will launch at the end of this month.
