Although Microsoft shipped a total of 2 million Windows Phone units during Q4 2010, the new mobile platform from the Redmondians has only managed to sell a modest 1.6 million units in Q1 of this year, according to research firm Gartner.
“Windows Phone saw only modest sales that reached 1.6 million units in the first quarter of 2011,â wrote Gartner. âDevices launched at the end of 2010 failed to grow in consumer preference and CSPs continued to focus on Android.â
Gartner has, however, painted a rosy picture for the future of the Windows Phone platform. It predicts that by 2015, Microsoft’s shipment of its mobile devices will increase in excess of 215 million units, much thanks to its partnership with Nokia. This will place Microsoft firmly as the second largest mobile phone platform, under Google Android.
