Twitter adds image sharing service

The 140 character limit of twitter forced the service to be limited in many ways, especially if you wanted to share a long url with some custom text. This spawned a whole new genre of link shortening services like bit.ly, tinyurl, ow.ly etc. And recently twitter included their own official url shortening service so that you don’t have to go anywhere to shorten your urls, by domain name of t.co. And just today Twitter has launched one more such service: Picture sharing.

This service is intended to replace user dependency on third party image sharing sites like TwitPic, Yfrog and Img.ur etc. Now when you use twitter website to tweet, you will see a camera icon which allows you to attach a picture with the tweet which goes as pics.twitter.com link to other readers. This feature will be gladly received by those who still use the twitter web interface rather than third party apps. This new service will also be updated in twitter official app to replace the third party image sharing support.

With url shortening and picture sharing already implemented, I think the next feature that twitter will be looking to officially nab is the long tweet feature provided by services like twitlonger.com and deck.ly. This will allow you to tweet even more than 140 characters, but the tweet will be trimmed and given with a link to read the full text of tweet on site. Lets see how long it takes them to officially launch this now.
