A UK based telecom firm, Movirtu, supported by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) have  launched a new global initiative called Business Call to Action (BCtA) which will provide mobile phone access to three million poor people in Africa and South Asia. Most of the beneficiaries will be women in rural areas.
The idea is that these people will not have to share a telephone number with friends or other family relatives who live nearby. People who will have a Movirtu cloud based mobile number will be able to access the service from any phone by logging into their own unique personal mobile number. From there they can make and receive calls as well as access vital information such as making mobile payments, banking, job opportunities and agricultural support and much more.
âEvidence shows that access to mobile communications is a way of improving lives and expanding the earning potential of one billion people living on $1-2 a day,â said Amanda Gardiner, BCtA Acting Programme Manager. She added that, âby providing low-income communities with access to secure mobile accounts and identities, Movirtu is helping to bridge the divide between those that have easy access to mobile phones and those that rely on community phones or paying a borrowerâs premium to friends to meet their communication needs,â to UN.
While this is a generous effort and one that will hopefully enrich the lives of many who need such services, it should also be noted that all of the recipients of these unique personal mobile numbers will be taught thorughly in order to take full advantage of this service for it to be actually successful. Ideally personal mobile handsets would be better, but this is at least a start in the right direction.
