People of the world, mark your calendars for 5th November, if hacker group Anonymous (including a whole load of script kiddies and fanboys everywhere as well) is to be believed, Facebook will be “destroyed” on that day. The hacktivist group released a video on YouTube proclaiming what it dubs OpFaceBook, a plan to take down the social networking giant. Their grouse lies against the website’s widespread privacy violations.
A voice garbled narrator on the video has this to say:
“Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from all around the world. Some of these so-called white-hat infosec firms are working for authoritarian governments, such as those of Egypt and Syria.
The message ends with a  warning: “When a service is “free,” it really means they’re making money off of you and your information”.
So how serious is this threat really? Our friends at Gizmodo had a chat with some prominents on the Anonymous IRC, and the common view was that OpFacebook operation is a maneuver by a splinter group and does not have the blessing of the collectives prominent members.
“#OPFacebook is not endorsed by Anonops at this time,” stated one member. The generally-reputable AnonOps Twitter feed backed this too.
What this means is it will probably be an offensive by a splinter group, which is unlikely to cause major mayhem, especially with months of forewarning to the guys at Facebook. But after what we’ve all seen with AntiSec operation, it would be foolish to discount them completely. Looks like we’ll all have to wait and see.
May be we will see another reason why the ’5th of November should never be forgot…’
