The days of getting a crappy unwanted toolbar with a software install appear to be limited, thankfully. We’ve all been at the receiving end of this kind of bad-ware, and even reputable software like Skype and RealPlayer have had this niggle in their installation process at one time or another.
The feature will debut next week in the Firefox Aurora beta. According to a source at Mozilla, the browser will automatically detect and disable any add-ons by third party Apps at start-up and ask the user for permission to enable them via a pop-up. This will give users more controls and transparency of their browser.
“Third-party applications frequently install bundled add-ons into Firefox as part of their own installation process. While some of these applications seek the user’s permission beforehand, others install add-ons into Firefox without checking to make sure the user actually wants them.”
Mozilla said a Skype toolbar add-on alone had caused some 40,000 crashed browsers in a week. At other occasions, third-party add-ons have compromised security and even inadvertently caused security loopholes.
