We have all dreaded the moment when our expensive, salary-consuming smartphones slips out of our palm and lands splattering on this cruel and evil concrete jungle. The loose battery parts, the broken cover bits, and the bits and bobs of the supposedly unbreakable gorilla glass working as daggers plunged deep into our sorrowful hearts.
It’s a bit dramatic, but we have all been there. Even Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos it seems, who have thought up, what is possibly, the most geekiest safety protection system a smartphone could ever get (until it learns how to fly before impact – I would buy it just for that).
As GeekWire found out, Bezos is a co-author of a patent that is designed to protect “devices from impact damage”. The idea is here that smartphones will be installed with its own version of the spidey-sense, or collision detection sensors. When the device detects that it’s about to hit another object at fast approaching speed, it could either deploy small airbags to dampen the fall, unleash tiny springs (so the phone can flip-flop to safety…?), or release small pockets of gas to land the device securely.
The airbags could work honestly, but the other two are absolutely nuts. I mean, really, come on.
