Apple has been ordered to pay $8 million to an Eastern Texas based company called Personal Audio, for infringing on playlist patents. Bloomberg says, that the jury in the lone star state made its decision late on Friday, upholding the validity of the patents complaint and slapping Apple with penalties.
According to Engadget, the patents “cover an audio player that can receive navigable playlists and can skip forward or backward through the downloaded list,” which does seem like quite a common feature in todays audio players if you ask me.
Personal Audio is a Texas-based patent holding company that makes its money from licensing its intellectual property to companies. In the original complaint they said that the Cupertino giant had been violating its patents ever since in every one of its new iPod or iPhone. and the firm claimed $84 million in damages.
The company had filed similar claims against Sirius XM Radio, Archos, and Coby Electronics. They all decided litigation to be futile and settled with Personal Audio out of court. Apple had also tried to get the case moved out of the district, but was denied.
