While most of our phones have the standard SIM cards, microSIMs have been around for about a year now and are especially prominent in the Apple iPhone’s and tablets. However, they failed to get the market adoption rate that they hoped for as almost no devices outside of that carry a slot to hold it. Just when that was getting some market share comes an even smaller SIM card.
Image Credit: PocketnowA German technology company by the name of Giesecke & Devrient today announced a SIM card called Nano-SIM which is set to be only two thirds the size of a micro-SIM even. They will measure at 12mm x 9mm with even the thickness of the card being reduced by 15%, which allows manufacturers to make even slimmer mobile phones.
Of course, all of this doesn’t matter until we actually have devices that support the card as well as mobile operators who begin using them as defaults. So fingers crossed.
