Apple’s iMessages gets blocked in the UAE

Local telecoms, Etisalat and du, have both blocked access to Apple’s iMessage service, citing an “investigation” with the Telecommunications Regulation Authority (TRA).

“Dear Customers, Please note that FaceTime has been disabled by #Apple, as for iMessage, it is currently under investigation with the #TRA,” Etisalat said in a tweet.

According to The National, TRA general director Mohamed Al Ghanim said that there was “no intention to block iMessage” and is checking with the telecoms to see why the service has been blocked. It is not clear when the service will be available, if at all.

iMessage allows iOS users to send messages and pictures to each other free of charge, much like BlackBerry Messenger.
