Gemasolar is one of a kind solar plant in Spain that has started operation with the help of a joint venture between Sener, Spanish engineering firm and Masdar, Abdu Chabi’s energy company.
This Solar plant uses a central tower filled with molten salt to store energy as it heats up to 500 degree Celsius by giant heliostats reflecting sunlight at the tower. This heat is used to generate high-pressure steam which in turn turns a turbine to generate energy. The molten salt continues to power the process even after the sun has set as compared to conventional photovoltaic cells. The 19.9 MW power plant is to provide electricity to 27,500 homes.
The power plant was inaugurated by King Juan Carlos of Spain and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, crown prince of Abu Dhabi, along with Masdar CEO Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Sener President Jorge Sendagorta, and several other royals from the United Arab Emirates.
Gemasolar was the first of three plants planned under this partnership of Spain and Abu Dhabi engineering firms. Spain has taken lots of interest in solar energy as form of clean and free energy source and has issued $62 million grants to 13 companies to develop more solar plants.
