Sony has confirmed that its beleaguered online PlayStation Network has gone down unexpectedly for some users around the world ... though the company has not revealed the cause or the extent of the problem.a
The network — which allows PlayStation 3 owners to play games online and download movies and music — went down sometime Wednesday morning.a
"We're aware that some of you are having issues trying to log into PSN," reads a tweet from the official PlayStation Twitter account. "We're working to resolve the issue, and we'll update you here."a
Meanwhile, the official European PlayStation Twitter account reported: "Current indications are that we'll be restoring PlayStation Network services in approx. two hours. We appreciate your patience."a
That was about an hour ago.a
UPDATE 2:40 p.m. PST: According to the official PlayStation Twitter account, users should now be able to log in.a
"If you encountered issues logging in today, try logging in now. Apologies for the inconvenience!" reads the tweet ... though Sony has yet to explain what caused the outage in the first place.a
Sony has struggled to recover from the damage done when hackers took down the PlayStation Network earlier this year and accessed the personal information of millions of gamers. The company recently hired a former Homeland Security official to help beef up security.a
I've reached out to Sony to find out what the cause of the outage was and how extensive it was and will update that information here as soon as they respond.a
