With the October 4th event for the announcement of the new iPhone updates, let’s not forget about the products that made Apple a household name overnight, a decade ago: the iPod. What was once the breadwinner of the family, the iPod Classic has now become a relic of the old, coming to its 10 year anniversary on October 24th this year. Yes, it’s been a decade since the iPod first came out!
Now, though, Apple is shifting more towards interactivity, and both the Classic and Shuffle iPods do nothing more than play music. TUAW have claimed that an inside source says the October 4th event will also mark the death of the iPod Classic and Shuffle. The gap will be taken over between the iPod Touch and iPod Nano, meaning that henceforth there won’t be any iPod without a touchscreen.
This isn’t really a surprising move, if true, because of Apple’s focus on  ”product transition”  mentioned in their last earnings call. That and most of Apple’s revenue now comes from the iPad and iPhone, so it only makes sense that their dedicated music players will also have somewhat similar, if limited, capacity of their biggest money earners.
I doubt anybody will miss the loss of these products given the growing trend towards touch based devices that can playback apps and games, in addition to music. In case you wanted a Classic or Shuffle, though, now’s a really good time to get them.
