Amazon adds Buffy, other Fox shows, to instant videos

By Athima Chansanchai

In a quality-trumping-quantity (for now) type of scenario, Amazon Prime is increasing its instant video streaming to cross the 11,000 movie and TV show threshold, with a recent influx of content that includes fan and critical favorites such as "The X-Files" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."a

Amazon Prime members, who pay $79 a year for unlimited free two-day shipping of many products that float through the Amazon world, received a perk earlier this year with the addition of unlimited Prime Instant videos for free with their membership.a

While 11,000 is a modest amount compared to the millions of DVDs offered on Netflix (soon to be Qwikster) and only about half of what Netflix offers on its streaming site, the uproar over streaming choices might be quelled a bit by additions like these. For some, the selection of streaming on Netflix — and other services such as Amazon Prime Instant and Hulu Plus — are just fine, especially if TV is a big part of viewing habits.a

Here is the message that greeted Amazon customers late last night and today:a

I have big news for Amazon Prime members - we've just signed a deal with FOX to add a broad selection of movies and TV shows to our unlimited instant streaming service later this fall. The new additions from the FOX library include 24, Arrested Development, The X-Files, Ally McBeal, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and - available on digital video for the first time - The Wonder Years. We now have deals with CBS, NBCUniversal, Sony, and Warner Bros, and adding FOX will bring the total to more than 11,000 movies and TV shows available for unlimited instant streaming.a

Since launching earlier this year, we have now doubled the number of titles available in Prime instant videos, and there's still more to come. Prime membership remains $79 a year, and of course features our unlimited free two-day shipping on millions of products. Prime is one of the best values anywhere.a

Prime instant videos can be played on more than 300 HDTVs, Blu-ray players, and set-top boxes.a

More choices keep popping up in the online streaming movie/video landscape. Blockbuster Movie Pass has teamed up with Dish Network customers to provide a subscription streaming movie service with bundles beginning at $10 a month. Available on either TV or on PC, the bundles will start with 3,000 movies to the TV and 4,000 movies to the PC, along with hundreds of on-demand TV shows. Hoping to snag folks into paying for the service, Blockbuster is offering it as a free perk for new Dish customers who subscribe to one of its packages.a
