Being the pioneer in web search by miles, whenever Google makes a change to its search algorithm, it’s a pretty big deal for most people. While before today the Google bot never used to index any commenting activity on a webpage that was from systems like Disqus or Facebook’s own commenting system, looks like they’ve now begun to do so.
Digital Inspiration observes that Google has now begun to index the text inside the comments of the Javascript-based comment systems including Disqus, IntenseDebate and Facebook’s own commenting platform. This means that the comments are now searchable from the search bar itself, and more commenting activity will lead to better search engine ranking.
To test it out on our own site, here’s a screenshot of one of the articles on our movies site and the Disqus comments on it.
We then test out the theory by trying to search the comment on Google and checking whether it appears in the search or not. And lo and behold:
This is a great change that will encourage admins to concentrate more on engaging their users rather than just page views and visits. However, there are some privacy concerns that arrive because of it including whether Facebook users want their comments to appear in a public search engine.
