Rumor: Completely new Mac on the way

An Apple enthusiast Japanese blog, Macotakara, posted yesterday that Apple could be working on a completely new Mac product.

“According to anonymous source in Asian supplier company, Apple seems to be preparing project to release new Mac line-up which is absolutely different from current products until end of this year. Though this source does not told in detail, this new Mac line seems to be clearly different products from current ones, so new product name could be given.”

It’s quite possible that this new line of Macs could be running iOS instead of OS X, but we are wondering what exactly in Apple’s current line-up would require a push in a new direction? They have the standard laptop market covered with the vanilla MacBook, the enthusiast and professional market covered with the MacBook Pro lines and in the ultrportable market they have the MacBook Air. On the desktop side they’re doing fine with the Mac Mini, iMac and Mac Pro lines. There’s just no place for a new category of products.

Personally I can only think of one market segment which Apple has traditionally lacked in, a gaming oriented laptop. Although, it may as well be a redesign of the new MacBook Pros that the “inside source” was referring to. Rest assured, if this rumor does indeed materialize, we’ll keep you updated.
