iPad 3 under development

Apple is currently working with their component and supplier manufacturers to build pre-production models of the next generation of the iPad, according to Wall Street Journal. The new iPad will have a retina display of 2048 x 1536 pixels on the same 9.7″ display screen. When iPad 2 came out last year, one of the biggest complaint by many was that it still had the original iPad’s resolution of 1024 x 768, looking especially outdated compared to the iPhone 4′s retina display.

An inside source said to WSJ that Apple has already placed orders for 1.5 million iPad 3s to be made in the last quarter of this year. ”Suppliers will ramp up production and try to improve the yield rate for the new iPad in the fourth quarter before its official launch in early 2012,” said the WSJ source.

The new iPad will be facing stiff competition from Android tablets that are already threatening Apple’s nearly 80% dominance on the tablet market. With the new 4G version of the Galaxy Tab coming out soon, Apple may also want to add that capability alongside the faster A6 processor. A better camera wouldn’t hurt either as the iPad 2′s camera was abysmal to say the least.

In any case, when the iPad 3 finally launches next year, it’ll be an interesting place in the market as Android tablets will also be coming out in their second generation, and Google will no doubt have quashed existing issues on Android, not to mention added new functionality. At least Web OS won’t be a problem anymore.
