Zuckerberg: Google 'trying to build their own little version of Facebook'

By Suzanne Choney

A "war" with Google? Not so, says Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in an interview with Charlie Rose, which airs Monday night on PBS.a

In a preview clip shared above, Rose asks Zuckerberg about a potential "flat-out war" over the next decade among Facebook, Google, Apple and Amazon for "the future."a

Zuckerberg poo-poohs that — initially: "People like to talk about war ... there are a lot of ways in which the companies actually work together. There are real competitions in there ... I don’t think that this is going to be the type of situation where there's one company that wins all the stuff."a

"But you're already getting in each other's businesses," Rose says, pointing out Google's social network, Google+, started earlier this year.a

"You know, Google, I think, in some ways, is more competitive and certainly is trying to build their own little version of Facebook," Zuckerberg says. "But you know, when I look at Amazon and Apple and I see companies who are extremely aligned with us, right? And we have a lot of conversations with people at both companies just trying to figure out ways that we can do more together, and there is just a lot of reception there."a

Well, there isn't a lot of evidence of "reception" from Google. Facebook certainly didn't receive it earlier this year after news reports that the company used a PR firm to conduct a smear campaign against Google for its privacy practices. Facebook said at the time "no 'smear' campaign was authorized or intended," but in the months since, Facebook has worked hard to be more "transparent," as it said it should have been at that time.a
