Adobe ceasing Flash for Handheld Devices

Adobe has announced today that it will not be developing Flash Plugins for handheld devices (primary Android and RIM) anymore. The following statement was released “Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We will no longer adapt Flash Player for mobile devices to new browser, OS version or device configurations. Some of our source code licensees may opt to continue working on and releasing their own implementations. We will continue to support the current Android and PlayBook configurations with critical bug fixes and security updates.”

We can’t help but think of Apple with this announcement. Apple has long been opposed to Flash, favoring HTML5 instead, and now it seems that both are on the same page, as Adobe has also promised investing more in generating HTML5 content.

This comes as a blow to RIM’s Playbook in particular, (as if its low sales weren’t an enough problem) as the tablet has put focus on its support for Flash.
