Life span of links you share

Bit.ly the famous link shortening service has done an interesting analysis of their data to see that for how much duration your shared links are effective after which people stop noticing it. The data is measured in half-life (i.e. how much time it takes to get a link half the hits it will ever receive in total life time). They use physics method to measure link life as the trend of radioactive element decay and link hits are kind of similar. That their initial half-life is most productive while after that they enter in slow decay time period. The resultant data is below:

There are many things deductible from this graph. First of all the optimum life of a link is around 3 hrs. Once you tweet / share a link with others, it will receive maximum hits in first 3 hrs. If your friend doesn’t notice it in that time span (i.e. doesn’t check his twitter or facebook etc). Then there is a good chance that he will miss the link in the rest of sea of links and status updates.

Secondly it shows that the biggest traffic come from twitter. This is also due to the fact that bit.ly data is based on links that are shortened via their own service. People who directly share full long urls on facebook will not contribute to this data analysis.

YouTube seems to be one of those service where your link gets a long life. People may stumble upon your videos for a long time to come and any links shared in description will keep getting you hits but they never reach the number of hits that social networks bring.

This data I think will be pretty useful for marketing people as it shows nature of people on social networks. If you are promoting something, then a gap of 4 to 5 hour to repeat your promoted links is good to get attention of maximum unique users. Just 1 tweet per day will just get missed in over crowded social networks.
