Last week I looked at the LG Optimus 3D’s ability to record videos in 3D and convert videos from 2D to 3D, coming out very impressed. Today I’ll be looking at the ease of accessibility of 3D as well as the general design of the Optimus 3D itself.
So let’s take it from the top then, with the body of the LG Optimus 3D. On the front, the top and bottom bezels have a brushed finish to it, with the major portion being dominated by the 4.3†multi-touch glass screen. The touch based buttons with haptic feedback are located at the very bottom, glowing white whenever you use them.
The top left side has two covered ports, one for the USB connection and the other for the mini-HDMI connector. The right side has the volume control buttons on the top and the dedicated 3D button at the bottom. The rear panel has a long metal strip going from top to bottom, with the two 5MP cameras and LED flash in between at the top and the loudspeaker at the bottom to complete the whole package.Overall the LG Optimus 3D feels like a sturdy smartphone, capable of withstanding a few drops and shocks on its own; I speak from personal experience. The warm brown color gives it a very suave feel indeed.
Now coming back to that dedicated 3D button I mentioned earlier, if you want to experience the 3D capabilities of this smartphone, that button is your one stop to activate everything in 3D. Pressing and holding the 3D button while on the Home Screen will show you a 3D carousel menu which lists all the 3D apps & games, gallery and the 3D YouTube channel. From here you can select anything you’d like to view in 3D and get going.
Now the 3D button is also useful outside of the dedicated 3D menu. Say you’re watching a normal (2D) video or picture or recording videos or taking pictures, you only need to press the 3D button and whatever you’re watching or recording will be converted to 3D.
Now the 3D buttons also works on games, but only those that are compatible in 3D mode. So when you buy the LG Optimus 3D, three major titles come bundled with it: Asphalt 6, Lets Golf 2 and NOVA. All three of these games can be played in native 3D or in 2D by pressing the 3D button. Like I said, the 3D button really is your gateway to all things 3D on the Optimus 3D.
And don’t worry about shortage of 3D content. While videos and pictures in 3D are readily available, and can easily be converted as well, 3D games will come in abundance from the 1st week of October as there will be a firmware update/patch that will allow all OpenGL games to be easily converted to 3D on the fly! And yes, that includes Angry Birds as well.
Ultimately all of what makes the 3D possible is the gorgeous 4.3†WVGA LCD display. I know that many will say that LCD can’t compare to Super AMOLED screens or the iPhone 4’s Retina Display, but none of those screens can do native 3D, let alone glasses free 3D. Even then, for normal 2D viewing the LG Optimus 3D’s screen has some of the best brightness and contrast ratio I’ve seen on many modern smartphones. It certainly has Nintendo’s 3DS screen utterly beat in terms of visual splendor.
