T-Mobile doubles 4G network speeds

By Rosa Golijan

T-Mobile has doubled its theoretical 4G network speeds in over 50 places across the U.S. and that's both exciting and disappointing.a

The exciting part of the news is that people in 55 areas will be able to enjoy theoretical peak download speeds of 42 megabits per second (Mbps) on any devices capable of handling such fast connections. The disappointing part? There's currently only one device which can take full advantage of the 42 Mbps speeds — the T-Mobile Rocket 3.0 laptop stick.a

Now while any devices which weren't specifically designed with the network upgrade in mind won't be able to even dream of hitting 42 Mbps, they will supposedly see some benefits from the network update anyway. According to T-Mobile representatives, most 4G devices in the upgraded network areas will begin hitting their own peak speeds —  which max out at about 21 Mbps— a lot more frequently and see more stable connections.a

The lucky areas which will be able to experience this phenomenon firsthand are listed below.a

Albany, Ga. Athens, Ga. Atlanta, Ga. Auburn, Ala. Augusta, Ga. Austin, Texas Bentonville, Ark. Boulder, Colo. Chattanooga, Tenn. Chicago, Ill. Dallas, Texas Deltona-Daytona Beach-Ormond Beach, Fla Denver, Colo. Detroit, Mich. Durham, N.C. El Paso, Texas Fort Collins, Colo. Gainesville, Fla. Gainesville, Ga. Greeley, Colo. Honolulu, Hawaii Houston, Texas Jacksonville, Fla. Long Island, N.Y. Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana, Calif. Macon, Ga. Mayaguez, Puerto Rico Miami, Fla. New Orleans, La. Oklahoma City, Okla. Olympia, Wash. Omaha, Neb. Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura, Calif. Phoenix, Ariz. Pittsburgh, Pa. Ponce, Puerto Rico Portland, Ore. Salinas, Calif. San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont, Calif. Valdosta, Ga. Vallejo-Fairfield, Calif. Warner Robins, Ga. Wichita, Kan.

Note that Orlando, New York, and Las Vegas have also received this network upgrade. They're simply not listed above because the 42 Mbps speeds have been live in those areas since mid-March.a
