Facebook Phone With HTC Is Called ‘Buffy’

It’s been in the media since ages that Facebook is secretly developing their own mobile phone but the company has been quick to deny it everyime. But according to a report on AllThingsD, that’s not true and there’s quite a few juicy details about the top-secret project to be coming our way.

Facebook has chosen the manufacturer HTC as their partner in making the phone which will have deep integration with social networking like no other. It will run a modified version of Android with an increased focus on using HTML5 as a primary platform for applications. The phone has been titled ‘Buffy’, as a reference to the vampire TV sho which I’m sure the phone has nothing to do with.

Facebook and HTC both declined to comment on the matter but Facebook did give the website this statement:

“Our mobile strategy is simple: We think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social. We’re working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world.”

To be honest, I don’t see where this phone stands among the heavy duty competitiors already battling it out in the smartphone industry. Facebook does have dominance in social media and mine that to maximum potential in the phone, but I don’t see that alone being a major selling factor over the iPhone or similar devices.

What do you think?
