Rumor: Android tablet makers pulling back on investment

aaaaaTablet makers like Acer, Motorola, LG and others are reportedly bailing out of the Android tablet sector due to poor sales and increasingly tough competition from Apple’s iPad.

aaaaaThe news comes via unnamed sources within the Taiwanese manufacturing industry, which claim that, instead of focusing on Android-based tablets, manufacturers are now reallocating resources to produce high-end smartphones that feature at least 4″-5″ display screen.

aaaaaAccording to the sources, sales of tablets from Acer, HTC, LG, Motorola, etc, have been “flat”, with only Samsung being able to make any inroads with a 10% market share with its Galaxy Tab series of devices.

aaaaaWhile sales of Motorola XOOM (250, 000 in two months) and RIM PlayBook (500,000 shipped last quarter) have been respectably good, they are dwarfed in comparison to the 25 million iPads sold in just 14 months.

aaaaaOne of the reasons cited for the poor sales of Android tablets is that users do not find any value in owning a tablet when they already have a large screen smartphone that does exactly what the tablet can. Another reason attributed to the “flat” sales is the lack of iTunes-esque central hub where users can purchase and manage content such as a songs, music videos, and movies.
