Foursquare checks in 10 million members

Foursquarea

Foursquare, the location-based social networking platform, announced today that it has grown to 10 million members across the globe.a

Accompanying this announcement was this jazzy animated graph showing the proliferation of users across six continents. Foursquare lets people use their phone to "check-in" at, say, a local eatery, and earn points for repeat visits. Yelp-like, Foursquare also lets people see where other members have eaten, shopped or had babies. a

Businesses can actually make their own account in order to track check-ins; 400,000 of them, including Bank of America, Walmart and Victoria's Secret have done so already.a

In Foursquare's two-year-and-a-bit lifetime, members have checked in at:a

1,105 beer halls in Germany 6,230 sake bars in Japan 4.7 million "Main Sts." across the U.S.

Foursquare members also recorded:a

5,230 church weddings 225 City Hall weddings 804 weddings in parks 1,061 baby births (via hospital check-ins)

The company is only a little over two years old. Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai founded the operation in New York City in March 2009, which grew to 10 employees a year later, and 70 today. a

Then again, 10 million members may seem a paltry following compared to Facebook, with its globe-dominating near-700 million accounts (and its own local check-in service), or Twitter, which outgrew the U.S. population in early May.a
