Amazon’s Kindle Tablet has been on the radar of many people for ages, and now we finally have some concrete details. Tech Crunch apparently got their hands on a working pre-production model with details on the hardware and the software.
First off, Amazon will just be releasing the 7″ version of the Kindle Tablet, with the 10″ model only coming in Q1 2012 if the first model is a success. Secondly, the Kindle Tablet will be available for sale by November and will be sold for $250; half the price of iPad 2 16GB WiFi and the same as Barnes & Nobles Nook Color eBook reader. It’ll have 6GB of internal storage, the idea being that most of the products will be available on Amazon’s own Cloud storage system. Hardware wise the rest of the specs aren’t clear, but it’s possibly running on a single core processor, with the dual-core version being reserved for the 10″ model. Looks and feel wise the Kindle Tablet is apparently similar to the BlackBerry PlayBook, especially with its rubberized body.
On the software side, the Kindle Tablet will be running a completely customized version of Android (probably 2.2 or earlier) and is being worked by Amazon independent of Google. The OS looks to have an Amazon like feel to it, with Blue, Black and Orange hues in the interface. All of Amazon’s services are completely integrated into the Kindle Tablet, with the Kindle App, Cloud Music Player, Instant Video Player and Amazon Appstore taking prominent roles. The main screen will be a carousel that looks similar to iTunes’ Cover Flow.
With a completely unique looking UI (doesn’t look like Android at all), well integrated Amazon services and cloud storage facilities as well as being practically designed, the Amazon Kindle Tablet looks to be one hell of a competitor in a market that’s currently dominated by Apple’s iPad.
