Microsoft Security Essentials tops as most used anti-virus

aaaaaAccording to a report from OPSWAT, Microsoft’s free anti-virus, Microsoft Security Essentials, is the most used anti-virus application worldwide.

aaaaaOf the 43,000 computers tested by OPSWAT, Microsoft Security Essentials was found running on 10.66% of the computers, beating Avira Antivir Personal (10.18%) and Avast! Free Antivirus (8.66%).

aaaaaMSE’s market share “could be attributed to the distribution advantage that Microsoft Security Essentials holds due to the convenient installation through Windows Update and its smooth integration with the popular IE browser”, according to the report.

aaaaaIn terms of worldwide vendor market share, Avast  and AVG topped the list with 12.37% share, followed by Avira at 12.29% and Microsoft Security Essentials at 11.24%.

aaaaaMicrosoft Security Essentials is available to all genuine Windows users. According to Microsoft, MSE has been downloaded approx. 30 million times since its launch in 2009.
