Nvidia showcases quad-core Kal-El processor

aaaaaNvidia showed off its upcoming super-fast quad-core mobile chip called Kal-El at Computex 2011 today.

aaaaaIn a video demonstration, the four cores were put to use on an Android game called Glowball, which will see a release when Kal-El-based devices hit market later in the year. The video shows off the dynamic lighting and improved physics capability of the new chip, delivering much more realistic visuals that any smartphone is capable right now.

aaaaaTo drive the point in, two of the cores were shutdown during the demonstration, rocketing the frame rates down to almost an unplayable level. With four cores back in again, the game became “butter smooth” like before.

aaaaaThe demo was based on a pre-production chip, which means that the final production version should deliver upto 24% to 30% faster performance.

aaaaaGaming on smartphones just got real.
