Sony’s PlayStation 3D display is split screen gaming heaven

aaaaaWith E3 come a whole lot of product announcements, not just games. I mean, it is the Electronic Entertainment Expo after all. With details of the PlayStation Vita’s launch, Sony also announced their new PlayStation branded 3D display. I say “display”, not a TV because Sony didn’t mention any TV tuner in their press release. Basically the PS 3D display is a 24″ monitor sporting a 1080p resolution. The running refresh rate isn’t specified, but given the 3D capabilities of the display set, I’m fairly confident it’s running at least 120Hz.

aaaaaOne of cool features of the PS 3D display that shows the gaming focus in the design process is its new ability to display 2 images for split screen games. Essentially two people can sit in front of this screen wearing 3D glasses and view two different images at the same time. The images displayed will be in 2D, not 3D. Basically 3D works by showing 2 frames running parallel, which is then converted by your glasses into one image for your eyes to see the depth of field in videos. Instead of one person seeing the same frame, two people will be seeing two different frames. Voila, instant split screen gaming goodness!

aaaaaThe TV comes bundled with one pair of 3D glasses and a copy of Resistance 3, which just so happens to have split screen multiplayer co-op as well. PS 3D Display will be made available in fall in US (and hopefully here in the Middle East too) and will retail for $499 (AED 1,800). I don’t know why they made it look like the PSP Go, but hey, it’s a PlayStation display, so there have to be some curves right?
