“Woot,” “Retweet” and “Cyberbullying” now added to Oxford English Dictionary

In their latest revision of the 100th anniversary, Oxford English Dictionary has added the words  ’retweet,’ ‘cyberbullying,’ ‘sexting,’ ‘mankini,’ ‘woot,’ ‘denialist‘ and ‘jeggings.’ Earlier this year they added the words ‘OMG’ and ‘LOL’ among others, much to the delight (and annoyance) of many people.

Updating the Oxford English Dictionary is a quarterly process and many of the latest words (old by internet standards) spoken in daily language are added. “It’s how the dictionary has always worked – we get as much evidence as we can so we know it’s not just a small number of people using the word and it’s not going to disappear,” told Angus Stevenson, the dictionary’s editor to The Telegraph. “New words reflect the society and era in which they enter the dictionary,” he said.

The two brothers Henry and George Fowler, created the first edition of Oxford English Dictionary  in their cottage in Guernsey, way back in 1911. “They were tireless in setting out new meanings for words,” said Stevenson. “Some of the subjects now as well as then are new technology and slang.”
