President Obama to Stop Making Factory Processor

U.S. President Barack Obama visited Intel's newest factory was built in Chandler, Arizona USA on Wednesday (01/25/2012). Actually, the plant is still under development and is planned to be operational in 2013. What is the reason Obama visited this factory?

Intel calls its new factory named Fab 42. The plant will produce processors with 14 nm fabrication. These processors will offer energy efficiency for ultrabook, tablets, and smart phones.

Construction of the plant is estimated to cost 5 billion U.S. dollars. Obama, in his visit, to see to what extent the development of the plant to be proud of these United States.

Construction of the plant is a continuation of strategic cooperation with Macron Technology Intel, based in Boise, Idaho, USA.

Situs Megaupload Ditutup

Washington: Megaupload, salah satu situs berbagi file internet terbesar, ditutup oleh pihak berwenang di AS setelah para pendiri situs itu dikenakan tuduhan pelanggaran undang-undang antipembajakan. Jaksa wilayah menuduh perusahaan itu telah merugikan para pemegang hak cipta sebesar US$ 500 juta (Rp 4,5 triliun).

Kabar ini muncul satu hari pascaprotes RUU Penghentian Pembajakan, namun para penyidik mengatakan mereka telah memerintahkan penutupan itu sejak dua pekan lalu. Departemen Kehakiman AS mengatakan dua pendiri Megaupload Kim Dotcom, yang memiliki nama asli Kim Schmitz dan Mathias Ortmann ditangkap di Auckland, Selandia Baru bersama dua pegawai mereka atas permintaan AS.

"Ini adalah salah satu kasus kejahatan hak cipta terbesar di Amerika Serikat dan langsung menargetkan penyalahgunaan situs penyimpanan konten dan distribusi publik untuk melakukan kejahatan hak intelektual," kata sebuah pernyataan dalam website mereka seperti dikutip BBC Indonesia, Jumat (20/1).

Tuduhan-tuduhan tersebut termasuk pelanggaran hak cipta, konspirasi untuk melakukan pemerasan dan pencucian uang. Pengadilan federal di Virginia memerintahkan 18 nama domain terkait dengan perusahaan itu disita. Departemen Kehakiman mengatakan lebih dari 20 perintah pencarian telah dieksekusi di sembilan negara dan aset senilai US$ 50 juta telah disita.

Jaksa mengklaim para tertuduh membuat sebuah model bisnis yang dirancang untuk mempromosikan pengunggahan materi-materi yang memiliki hak cipta. "Para konspirator diduga membayar para pengguna situs itu untuk mengunggah konten ilegal dan mempublikasikan link konten itu ke pengguna lain di seluruh dunia," menurut sebuah pernyataan.

Sebelum ditutup, Megaupload memuat pernyataan menyangkal semua tuduhan dan menyebutnya sebagai dilebih-lebihkan.(ADO)

Pelangi Malam Ada di Jepang

Tokyo: Pelangi merupakan fenomena alam yang sangat indah. Busur warna-warni yang muncul di langit sangat memukau mata seakan menyadarkan kita akan kebesaran Tuhan. Pelangi biasanya muncul setelah turun hujan. Tapi, ternyata pelangi juga dapat muncul pada malam hari.

Fenomena itu diabadikan dalam jepretan foto di prefektur paling selatan Okinawa, Jepang. Seorang peneliti dari Observatorium Astronomi Nasional Jepang di pulau itu menggunakan kamera khusus untuk merekam penampakan pelangi pada Sabtu tengah malam pekan lalu di Pulau Ishigaki, Jepang.

Seperti yang dikutip dalam laman NHK, Rabu (11/1), seorang Ilmuwan Jepang Hidekazu Hanayama yang melihat pelangi malam itu menganggapnya sebagai pengalaman mistik.

Berbeda dengan pelangi di siang hari yang ditimbulkan dari cahaya matahari, pelangi malam ini tercipta dari cahaya bulan. Menurut sumber, pelangi malam dapat dilihat sebelum dan sesudah bulan purnama saat udara lembab dan langit yang gelap. Fenomena ini terjadi akibat tetesan air di atmosfer yang membiaskan cahaya dari bulan.

Ishigaki memang sedikit gerimis pada Sabtu petang dan pelangi dilaporkan terlihat selama sekitar 30 menit ketikabulan purnama. Observatorium mengatakan, fenomena ini pernah difoto di Hawaii dan tempat lain, tapi jarang di Jepang.

Tapi fenomena ini sulit tertangkap kamera, karena cahaya bulan jauh lebih lemah daripada sinar matahari. Dan untuk melihat fenomena menakjubkan ini, bulan harus cukup rendah di kaki langit dan posisi kita harus berada membelakangi bulan.(RZK/MEL)

Mahasiswa Inggris Buat Nintendo Terbesar di Dunia

London: Untuk menghormati perangkat paling ikonik di dunia gamer, NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) joypad, mahasiswa Inggris membuat "controller" game terbesar di dunia. Alat untuk menjalankan permainan itu berukuran 30 kali lipat dari controller standar.

Media Newslite mewartakan, Kamis (19/1), pembuatan alat game itu dilakukan oleh mahasiswa tingkat akhir Ben Allen. Pria berusia 23 tahun itu membutuhkan waktu selama lima bulan untuk mempelajari controller game standar.

Dalam pembuatan alat ciptaannya itu, Allen harus benar-benar mempelajari seluruh komponen dan isi controller game tersebut. Ia harus merogoh kocek hingga 4.000 Poundsterling atau sekitar Rp 55 juta.

Hasil karya mahasiswa yang menempuh studi di Universitas Delft, Belanda itu berhasil masuk ke dalam Buku Catatat Dunia Guinness 2012. (Vin)

Studi: Terlalu Sering Buka Facebook Bisa Bikin Sedih

Melalui Facebook, pengguna dapat saling tahu kehidupan teman online-nya. Namun terlalu banyak menyambangi Facebook dan melihat profil orang lain ternyata bisa membuat sedih, sekaligus iri.

Demikian simpulan riset sosiolog Hui-Tzu Grace Chou dan Nicholas Edge dari Utah Valley University di Amerika Serikat. Beberapa pengguna berat Facebook berpotensi sedih (atau iri) karena meyakini bahwa user Facebook yang lain tampak bahagia, terutama dari foto-fotonya.

Memang di Facebook, banyak yang berlomba memposting foto-foto dengan nuansa bahagia. Foto-foto ini membuat beberapa teman online yang melihatnya bersedih karena menganggap kehidupan mereka sempurna.

Mereka cenderung membandingkan foto-foto bahagia tersebut dengan kehidupannya sendiri. Alhasil mereka jadi kecewa karena kehidupan tampaknya tidak adil.

"Melihat foto bahagia orang lain di Facebook memberikan impresi bahwa kehidupan mereka selalu bagus," ucap Chou. Ia menambahkan kesan selalu bahagia cenderung muncul pada teman Facebook yang kurang begitu dikenal di dunia nyata.

Dalam studi ini seperti detikINET kutip dari Economic Times, Kamis (19/1/2012) periset mewancarai 425 responden yang terdiri dari para pelajar. Mereka diwawancarai soal penggunaan Facebook dan tingkat kebahagiaannya.

Pengguna Facebook bisa makin eksis berbagi lebih banyak aktivitas yang dilakukannya di jejaring sosial tersebut dengan hadirnya puluhan aplikasi baru.

Facebook merilis 60 aplikasi baru yang memungkinkan pengguna seperti mengkatalogkan setiap aspek kehidupan mereka, mulai dari film, buku, makanan hingga fashion, kemudian membaginya ke teman-teman mereka.

"Apapun yang Anda sukai, cerita apapun yang ingin Anda sampaikan, Anda bisa menambahkannya di timeline," kata Carl Sjogreen, selaku Director Platform Products di Facebook.

Dilansir AFP, Kamis (19/1/2012), 60 aplikasi yang dirilis ini diantaranya termasuk kontribusi dari sejumlah perusahaan di Amerika Serikat (AS) yang bekerjasama dengan Facebook seperti Foodspotting, Rotten Tomatoes, Pinterest, TripAdvisor dan e-reader Kobo.

Misalnya, seseorang yang membaca eBook dari Kobo, bisa menandai tulisan menarik yang ingin dibagi ke teman Facebook. Aplikasi ini juga bisa secara otomatis melacak buku mana yang telah mulai atau selesai dibaca si pengguna dan menghubungkannya dengan pengguna Facebook lain yang juga membaca buku yang sama.

Namun perlu diketahui, para developer aplikasi akan memiliki kontrol atas aktivitas pengguna yang muncul di Facebook. Ini adalah isu yang menyinggung aturan privasi yang kerap dipermasalahkan.

Yang jelas, pengguna harus tahu bahwa ketika akan menggunakan aplikasi tersebut mereka akan dimintai izin agar developer bisa melacak kebiasaan dan aktivitas mereka. Dan secara otomatis, data ini nantinya akan dikirimkan kembali ke Facebook.

Las Vegas, AS - Ultrabook memang sangat memikat lantaran memiliki tubuh yang ramping. Seakan tak ingin tertinggal, AMD pun memiliki produk sejenis yang diklaim lebih tipis.

Produk tersebut diberi nama Ultrathin, yang sudah dipamerkan pada ajang Consumer Electronic Show (CES) 2012 di Las Vegas, Amerika Serikat.

Di dalam Ultrathin AMD membenamkan chip bernama sandi Trinity dengan prosesor dan kartu grafis yang sudah terintegrasi. Spesikasinya pun tidak main-main.

Prosesor yang digunakan merupakan pengembangan dari arsitektur Bulldozer, sedangkan GPU merupakan keturunan dari Radeon HD 7970, tapi dengan konsumsi daya yang lebih rendah.

Pada platform Ultrathin chip Trinity diklaim hanya mengkonsumsi sekitar 17 Watt, sedangkan versi notebook sedikit lebih tinggi dengan 35 watt.

Dikutip detikINET dari Arstechnica, Jumat (13/1/2012), AMD belum bisa memastikan kapan produk ini akan mulai tersedia di pasaran. Tapi dipastikan harganya akan lebih rendah dari Ultrabook termurah sekali pun.

Kalau Cuma Jualan, Google Tak Perlu Diberi 'Karpet Merah'

Google diminta tidak cuma sekadar buka kantor dan berjualan hosting saja untuk menggaet kalangan usaha kecil dan menengah (UKM). Namun juga berinvestasi langsung dengan membangun server dan membuka lapangan kerja di Indonesia.

"Jangan hanya membuka kantor, menggoda UKM lokal menggunakan hosting-nya. Itu namanya berjualan saja. Kalau cuma jualan, jangan terlalu dibesar-besarkan dan diberi karpet merah yang bagus," ujar Anggota Komite Badan Regulasi Telekomunikasi Indonesia (BRTI) Heru Sutadi, di Jakarta, Rabu (11/1/2012).

Meski BRTI sejatinya mengapresiasi program ini, namun lembaga ini khawatir keberadaan server Google yang tidak di Indonesia bisa menimbulkan rahasia UKM disadap. "Ini harus dipahami masalah bahaya keamanan informasi nasional," katanya.

Heru juga menyayangkan, pola komunikasi Google dalam peluncuran program Bisnis Lokal Go Online atau Get Indonesian Business Online (GIBO) yang tidak menyertakan Kementerian Kominfo walaupun temanya mendukung UKM.

"Ini seperti mengadu domba antar instansi pemerintah. Kementerian teknis karena kritis melihat persoalan sering tidak dilibatkan," sesalnya.

Di lain kesempatan, Menteri Perindustrian MS Hidayat berpendapat apa yang dilakukan Google saat ini cukup membantu UKM agar bisa memanfaatkan teknologi informasi untuk menunjang bisnisnya.

"Saya mengapresiasi kehadiran Google untuk memberdayakan kemampuan UKM di Indonesia. Perekonomian kita ditopang oleh UKM yang kemampuan dan modalnya masih kurang," kata dia.

Apple might take legal action against Steve Jobs action figure manufacturers

We have spoken earlier of the Steve Jobs action figures with the freakishly uncanny resemblance to its subject. The action figures, made by Chinese company ‘In Icons’ are scheduled for release inÂ February, but apparently Apple aren’t about to let that happen.
The Telegraph reports that Apple are unhappy with action figures (wonder why), and are threatening legal action against In Icon unless they cease manufacturing and distributing the doll. Apple claims that the manufacturer’s are illegally using the likeness of Steve Jobs, which they claim to own. Apple has already sent a letter to In Icon, whereby claiming the use of anything resembling the company’s logo or a person’s name or likeness is illegal, and counts as a criminal offence.
This is not the first time that such an issue as risen. Strangely enough, there was a previous attempt to create a Steve Jobs figure in 2010 by the Company Mic Gadget, but it was successfully stopped by Apple.

Google Berharap Buka Kantor di Indonesia pada Q1 2012

Raksasa internet Google mengaku telah memikirkan masak-masak soal pembangunan kantor perwakilannya di Indonesia. Jika tak ada aral melintang, kantor Google Indonesia diharapkan sudah berdiri pada Q1 2012.

"Mudah-mudahan representatif office Google di Indonesia sudah bisa dibuka pada Q1 atau Q2 2012," tukas Krishna Zulkarnain, Country Marketing Manager Google untuk Indonesia kepada detikINET.

Krishna menjelaskan, Google sejatinya sudah mematok target pembangunan kantor di Indonesia pada tahun 2011 lalu. Hanya saja, ada sejumlah proses yang harus dijalankan sehingga rencana tersebut menjadi molor.

"Sejauh ini tidak ada hambatan, kami sudah melalui proses tersebut dengan lancar. Jadi tunggu sampai Q1 atau Q2 lah, semoga bisa buka," lanjutnya.

Ranah internet Indonesia sendiri dinilai Google sebagai pasar yang seksi. Terlebih Indonesia memiliki populasi penduduk hingga 230 juta jiwa, dimana 45 juta di antaranya adalah pengguna internet. Itu belum ditambah dengan pengguna seluler yang sudah menembus angka 200 juta.

Artinya masih banyak peluang yang bisa digarap sang raksasa mesin pencari itu di Tanah Air. Dan peluang untuk melakukan penetrasi terbuka lebar.

Google sendiri baru saja menegaskan penetrasinya di ranah online Indonesia lewat program Bisnis Lokal Go Online atau Get Indonesian Business Online (GIBO) yang menyasar usaha kecil dan menengah (UKM).

Managing Director Google Southeast Asia Julian Persaud mengatakan, tujuan utama Bisnis Lokal Go Online ini adalah untuk membuat website dan mendorong UKM aktif secara online dalam waktu satu tahun ke depan.

Adapun 100 ribu UKM pertama yang mendaftar dapat memiliki website, domain, dan hosting gratis selama satu tahun. Pada tahun berikutnya UKM tersebut akan mendapatkan potongan harga dan hanya dikenakan biaya maksimal Rp 150 ribu per tahunnya.

Sementara terkait tuntutan untuk pembangunan server di Indonesia, Google mengakui hal itu juga masuk dalam evaluasi perusahaan. Jika sudah tertuang dalam aturan resminya, Google siap menjalankan.

Namun mereka juga harus bersikap realistis, yakni dengan mengevaluasinya dari sisi hitung-hitungan di atas kertas. Apakah bakal menguntungkan atau tidak bagi Google nantinya?

HTC Radiant LTE picture leaked

A picture of an HTC phone was recently leaked, and while the phone in question looks very similar to the HTC Titan, rumor has that it is a picture of HTC Radiant LTE, HTC’s upcoming Windows Phone.

The picture comes from PocketNow, who point out to a number of percieved differences between the Radiant in the picture and the HTC Titan, such as the enlarged HTC Logo, and a front facing camera with a bigger lens. Furthermore, differences on the backside of the phone include moving the dual-LED flash to the right side of the camera.

Nothing has been revealed in terms of specifications, but PocketNow speculates that it will be standard Windows Phone specs, with 512MB RAM, 1.5GHz RAM, and a similar WVGA screen to the Titant.

Lebih Nampol Jika Google Bangun Infrastruktur Cloud di Indonesia

Investasi yang dijalankan Google lewat program Bisnis Lokal Go Online atau Get Indonesian Business Online (GIBO) di Indonesia, dinilai belum nampol. Hal itu akan lebih berarti jika sang raksasa internet menggelontorkan investasi dengan membangun infrastruktur cloud services-nya.

Menurut M. Salahuddien, pengamat dan praktisi internet Indonesia, infrastruktur layanan komputasi awan itu nantinya bisa menjadi basis dalam melayani emerging market yang lain. Sehingga posisi Indonesia akan menjadi lebih signifikan.

"Seperti mobile yang mana Android Google jadi salah satu yang maju pesat di sini (Indonesia-red.)," tukas pria yang biasa disapa Didin Pataka itu, kepada detikINET.

Nah, jika hal itu dilakukan, baru relevan jika Indonesia bicara data center lokal. Sebab pastinya investasi infrastruktur cloud services itu signifikan.

"Mulai dari segi capital, manajemen, SDM, serta kapasitas infrastrukturnya, ada data center, bandwidth, riset dan pengembangan, serta lainnya," tukas Didin.

Namun pertanyaan yang kemudian muncul adalah, apakah market Indonesia ini sudah waktunya digarap? Seperti kita ketahui, Google sudah beberapa kali diisukan investasi ke Indonesia, nyatanya baru sekarang hal itu ditegaskan.

"Itu artinya, barangkali market di Indonesia belum cukup menjanjikan apakah dalam hal adaptasi layanan maupun daya belinya, di Android market saja mungkin kecil sekali pembelanjaan kita meskipun angka penggunanya mencapai lebih dari 30 juta," kata Didin.

"Begitu juga minat iklan masih kecil, silakan diamati pertumbuhan iklan di portal utama google.co.id apabila dibandingkan Yahoo! Jelas tertinggal apalagi Facebook," lanjutnya.

Namun ini semua kembali lagi ke Google. Seberapa besar mereka memandang pasar Indonesia untuk kemudian menggelontorkan investasi di dalamnya.

"Kalau untuk skala dan standar yang Google harapkan, tentu belum cukup karena marketnya kecil transaksinya baru kerumunan doang, gak ada duit. Lain soal kalau Google justru ingin masuk untuk menjadi pelopor bahkan mendorong supaya market lekas tumbuh," pungkasnya.

Sementara terkait program GIBO yang diusung Google di Indonesia dengan menggandeng UKM, pengurus tim pengawas internet Id-SIRTII ini juga menilainya tak terlalu signifikan jika dilihat dari sisi Kominfo.

"Keberadaan Google dengan bisnis online yang ditawarkannya itu hanyalah satu bisnis hosting saja yang value added-nya bagi industri internet kecil. Sebab layanan sejenis yang dilakukan pengusaha hosting lokal juga sudah banyak dilakukan, misalnya produk Telkomnet dan plasa.com yang bahkan didukung mitra inkubasi, bukan hal yang baru bagi UKM nasional," seloroh Didin.

"Mungkin ini sekadar hype baru karena nama besar Google dan mitra yang digandengnya beragam. Dalam konsep yang agak berbeda, Yahoo sudah lebih dulu masuk dengan sasaran untuk mendorong industri internet kreatif lokal seperti Koprol dan lainnya," ia menandaskan.

Symantec Softpedals Indian Source Code Theft

Symantec is working to soften the revelation that a segment of its source code for Norton products was stolen in a security Relevant Products/Services breach. But is it enough to convince customers that Symantec is holding its security secrets tight to its chest?

An Indian hacking group is claiming that it got its hands on source code used in the Norton anti-virus program. Known as the Lords of Dharmaraja, the group is making threats to take the source code public, potentially giving a black eye to the security industry leader.

Yama Tough, a hacker in Mumbai, is serving as spokesman for the Lords of Dharmaraja. He claims the group obtained the source code from less-than-bulletproof Indian government servers.

Hackers Speak Out

"As of now we start sharing with all our brothers and followers information Relevant Products/Services from the Indian Military Intelligence servers, so far we have discovered within the Indian Spy Programme source codes of a dozen software Relevant Products/Services companies which have signed agreements with Indian TANCS programme and CBI," the group said in a statement on its Google+ page.

"Now we release confidential documentation we encountered of Symantec corporation and its Norton AntiVirus source code which we are going to publish later on, we are working out mirrors as of now since we experience extreme pressure and censorship from U.S. and India government agencies."

Symantec Answers Back

Cris Paden, a senior manager for Symantec's corporate communications, said the drama began on Wednesday. That's when a local chapter of Anonymous from India claimed in an online forum they possessed source code for Symantec's Norton Antivirus solutions.

"Symantec's Information Security team investigated the claims and found that instead they possessed documentation from 1999 describing how Norton Antivirus worked, but no source code was included. Hence, the claim was false," Paden said.

However, he added, on Thursday morning, the same chapter announced they possessed additional code. Based on the samples they provided to the same online forum, Symantec's Information Security team investigated and confirmed they did indeed have code; but that it was 4 and 5 years old and pertained to two enterprise Relevant Products/Services products, SEP 11, and SAV 10.2.

10 Million Updates Later

"While SAV 10.2 is still serviced by Symantec, it has been discontinued. SEP 11 has since evolved into SEP 12.0 and 12.1," Paden said. Symantec recommends users keep their product version updated to ensure protection against any new threats that might materialize as a result of this incident.

"Another thing to bear in mind: In 2010 alone, we distributed 10 million updates to our products in response to new cyber threats. If you extrapolate to four and five years, you can get an idea of how much our products/solutions/and code has evolved over the following years," Paden said. Jika seseorang melakukan pencarian dengan keyword 'anjing' misalnya, foto anjing miliknya atau teman-teman Google+ akan muncul di deretan teratas hasil pencarian.

"Di Google, kami selalu ingin menghadirkan jawaban paling komprehensif dan relevan dari setiap pertanyaaan Anda," kata juru bicara Google Amit Singhal.

Sony Offers New Superfast Memory Cards; Nikon Has Camera for Them

In time for next week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Sony is launching a new generation in memory Relevant Products/Services cards. Called XQD, they will initially come in 16 and 32 GB sizes, and feature data Relevant Products/Services transfer rates of 1Gbps/125MB/s. Nikon is also announcing a new flagship camera in its digital single-lens reflex line, the first camera to use the new memory cards.

The target market for the new cards is the advanced photographer who deals with huge image files in RAW format. Fast write speeds mean shooters have less waiting between shots in memory-heavy formats such as RAW, and can edit previously recorded material faster.

In compatible DSLR cameras, such as the new Nikon, shooters can capture as many as 100 RAW images in continuous shooting mode, without pausing.

'Entirely New Meaning'

Viviano Cantu, director of consumer media for Sony Electronics, said in a statement that, while "memory card technology has done a great job of keeping pace," the new cards "give an entirely new meaning to speed and performance."

The XQD memory card spec, announced in November and recently approved by the CompactFlash Association as an open format, requires the PCIe expansion card standard for serial interfaces and an optimized controller in order to take advantage of the speed.

Along with the card, Sony is introducing a new USB 2.0/3.0 compatible XQD card reader. An XQD ExpressCard Adapter is available for computers with an ExpressCard 34 card slot. The memory cards will be on sale in February, at $130 for the 16 GB and $230 for the 32 GB.

The new format was adopted by the CompactFlash Association in December, and is about 75 percent the physical size of current CompactFlash cards. While CompactFlash cards are based on the older PCMCIA standard, XQD are built around PCI Express. Sony said that capacities and transfer speeds substantially higher than the initial XQD products are expected.

The New Race Is On

New CompactFlash cards are also being announced this week and next, such as the Lexar Professional 1000x, available in 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, and 128 GB sizes. The company said the new cards will have a "minimum guaranteed sustained read transfer speed" of 150MB per second. In theory, XQD cards could go as high as 640MB per second for that spec, so the new race is on.

At the same time that Sony is announcing its release of the new cards, Nikon is announcing the D4, a FX-format camera that will be the top of the line for its DSLR models. It is the first camera designed to take the XQD cards, although it can also use CompactFlash.

The D4 has a new CMOS 36.0 x 23.9 mm image sensor, and EXPEED 3, an image-processing engine that's been optimized specifically for DSLR. The company said the new camera has an effective pixel count of 16.2 million pixels, features a range of light sensitivities from ISO 50 to ISO 204800, and offers a 51-point autofocus system. The D4 is also equipped with an Ethernet port for wired LAN, and it supports a separate, compact wireless Relevant Products/Services transmitter.

Sejak 2 Januari, para pekerja meminta kenaikan gaji. Namun Foxconn malah memberi dua opsi. Yakni ditransfer ke jalur produksi alternatif dengan kompensasi, atau mempertahankan pekerjaannya tapi tanpa kenaikan gaji.

Sebagian besar pekerja memilih opsi pertama, namun kompensasi yang dijanjikan tidak kunjung datang. Sementara sebagian kecil lainnya memilih untuk resign.

Juru bicara Microsoft mengatakan mereka sangat serius memperhatikan kondisi kerja di pabrik Foxconn. Microsoft berkomitmen terhadap perlakukan yang adil dan aman bagi para pekerja di vendor yang menjadi mitra mereka dan memastikan vendor tersebut sesuai dengan kebijakan Microsoft.

"Facebook adalah software yang memiliki paling banyak bug," ujar Evan Priestley, mantan teknisi Facebook saat menjawab pertanyaan di situs tanya-jawab Quora. Ia sendiri pernah mendokumentasikan puluhan bug yang ia temukan sejak bulan September, demikian dikutip detikINET dari HuffingtonPost, Kamis (12/1/2012).

Saat dikunjungi di tempat pendokumentasiannya, yakni situs Pinterest, sebanyak 30 bug bisa dilihat. Fitur chat yang ngadat, notifikasi sama yang muncul dua kali, kegagalan Facebook dalam memposting komentar, dan sejumlah bug lainnya.

IBM Exec Offers Inside Scoop on Green Hat Acquisition

IBM on Wednesday announced its first acquisition of the year -- and Charles Chu, director of product management and strategy Relevant Products/Services at Big Blue's Rational Software unit, is offering the inside scoop on how this technology will help the software Relevant Products/Services testing world.

IBM acquired Green Hat, a software quality and testing solutions for the cloud Relevant Products/Services and other environments. Financial terms were not disclosed. Green Hat will become part of IBM's Rational Software business when the deal closes.

Green Hat helps customers improve the quality of software applications by enabling developers to leverage cloud computing technologies to conduct testing on a software application prior to its delivery.

App Testing Complexity

"In the application development area, especially with managing quality, the industry has faced three primary issues," Chu said.

"Over the course of the last decade-plus, there's been a lot of labor moving from mature markets to lower cost countries such as India or China. After the first big bang re-level set onto a lower cost base, the cost base increases and it's driving more cost-pressure on the rest of the industry."

The second factor Chu mentioned is the sheer complexity of testing today's applications. He noted that our fathers and grandfathers had a pretty easy life -- developers wrote applications in COBOL, tested them and launched on a mainframe. Today, there is a myriad of applications running at the same time that make it more difficult to test and manage quality.

This reality has historically forced developers to construct an actual testing lab made up of both hardware and software to test applications. This time-consuming and labor-intensive process has become even more compounded with the short development cycle needed to compete in rapidly expanding markets.

Balancing Speed and Quality

"The third dynamic we see is customers trying to tune between quality and speed. When a telecom provider provisions a new phone, that is one application. There is also an ERP application that manages inventory and a billing system. So every time I need to test my application I need those three environments -- or some small subset of those three environments -- in my test lab and I need human beings to set up a test lab for me," Chu said. "The alternative is not to test it as often, but that sacrifices quality."

When combined with the IBM Rational Solution for Collaborative Lifecycle Management, Chu said developers and testers can achieve unprecedented levels of efficiency, effectiveness and collaboration Relevant Products/Services while delivering quality software to their business. If you are found doing so, it will be counted as a misdemeanor and you will be fined $125 USD. This also applies to every company there.

And there’s no working around this limitation either. If someone else uses your Wi-Fi to do so, you are held liable. Every internet cafe has to make sure they take the right procedures to block all foreign sites and not visit them themselves either, otherwise their business is subject to closure. Will Apple Release a Lower-End iPad?

The new entry-level price of the major tablet Relevant Products/Services lines may be moving to $200 to $300. Not only are the quickly selling Amazon Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet in that price range, there are now rumors across the Web that Apple also will be releasing an entry level model this year for $299.

The new pricing could increase tablets' appeal for businesses as well as consumers. According to the NPD Group, almost 75 percent of small- and mid-sized businesses in the U.S. -- those with 1,000 or fewer employees -- plan to buy tablets over the next 12 months. Seventy-three percent of SMBs surveyed said they would do so, an increase from 68 percent in NPD's second-quarter results.

Free iPad?

The rumors are indicating that Apple will be releasing three models this year, for the emerging high-end, middle and low-end segments of the market. In keeping with its traditional strategy Relevant Products/Services, many observers expect that the $499 iPad entry price will become $399 on a lower end model in the next wave of releases, but if two new, lower models are released, the Cupertino, California technology giant might try to stave off the growing competition from the lowest-priced models.

One of the biggest tablet stories of 2011 was the Hewlett-Packard TouchPad fire sale, which saw the failed device selling like hotcakes at $99. Now, Research In Motion is looking for something of a repeat performance in early 2012 with its latest pricing strategy .

Consumers who have been watching and waiting to see if RIM would slash the price of its struggling BlackBerry PlayBook are glad they did. RIM is offering its tablet devices -- regardless of whether consumers choose the 16 GB, 32 GB or 64 GB -- for just $299. That's down from prices of $499, $599 and $699, respectively.

The catch is you have to make the purchase through RIM's online store. This isn't the first time RIM has reduced the price on its PlayBook -- retailers cut PlayBook prices to $299 in September -- and industry watchers aren't sure it won't be the last. RIM wrote off $485 million in PlayBook inventory in the fourth quarter.

Too Little, Too Late?

It may be too little, too late for RIM with the Amazon Kindle Fire making waves and Apple reportedly readying to launch an iPad 3 and lower-cost iPad 2s. It may also be too little, too late for RIM's co-CEOs. Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie have given up their co-Chairman roles, according to the Financial Post, an Ontario, Canada-based business newspaper.

What went wrong?

The PlayBook went on sale April 19. But it debuted with fundamental features missing, including a contacts database, a calendar, a chat application and a 3G or 4G connection, not to mention native e-mail. If you want all those features, you have to tether your PlayBook to your BlackBerry -- if you have a BlackBerry. The PlayBook only makes available 3,000 applications, compared with the iPad's more than 160,000.

"If RIM had come out with a fantastic, enterprise -class tablet, could that have been a way to compete with the iPad? Yes. Did RIM come out with a fantastic, enterprise-class tablet? Hell no!" said Avi Greengart, an analyst at Current Analysis. "I was astounded that RIM launched the PlayBook without a native e-mail client, and to this day there is no native e-mail client on the device. They promised it would be updated at the beginning of the summer and it's still delayed."

What Can Save PlayBook?

E-mail clients aside, will consumers flock to the $299 PlayBook the way they did to the $99 Touchpad? Greengart doesn't think so. As he sees it, PlayBook doesn't do much beyond Web browsing -- and that on a 7-inch display. On the upside, the operating system seems stable. But, Greengart quipped, that may be because it's not doing much.

The PlayBook 2 is expected as soon as February. Updated hardware may turn heads, but Greengart said the problem with PlayBook is software .

"If RIM does do a major update to the software and a major push around getting applications available for this device -- and does doing that concurrently with the new hardware -- it would be great," Greengart said. "But simply releasing a thinner, faster piece of hardware or even a larger screen sizes at this point, which is something they should have done in the first place, isn't going to help."

LG unveils stylish new 3D glasses for 2012

The F310 is characterized by a distinctive design that combines soft lines within a slim frame. Unlike many previous 3D glasses, the lenses have been curved to better accommodate the shape of the wearers face, as well as to improve the overall CINEMA 3D viewing experience. The F310 weighs a mere 13.5 grams, making it 20 percent lighter than LGs previous design.

Another new item for 2012 includes the clip-on F320. Clip-on 3D glasses are unique to 3D TVs based on Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) technology, which is at the heart of CINEMA 3D TV. Compared to the previous generation clip-on 3D glasses, the F320 weighs 25 percent less at 5.5 grams.

Developed in collaboration with Alain Mikli, the F360s half-rim frame design is sportier and only weighs 16 grams. The lenses of the F360 have been curved and cover most of the wearers face, deepening the immersive CINEMA 3D experience. The stylish F360, as well as all 3D glasses from LG, can also worn in theaters showing 3D movies since both CINEMA 3D and theaters utilize the same FPR and RealD technologies.

LGs share of the global 3D TV market increased from 7.6 percent during the first quarter of 2011 to 14 percent by September. Analysts See Hidden Value in Google's Chrome Browser

Google's free Chrome browser represents a hidden billion-dollar business for the search engine giant, according to a new investor note from Piper Jaffray. By prodding other browser makers to continually innovate, the firm's analysts say, Google's services are able to deliver even richer experiences to users.

This is a major plus for the search engine giant, noted Piper Jaffray analysts Gene Munster, Douglas Clinton and Matthew Lebo in a Wednesday investor note.

"Based on Google's recent search distribution deal with Mozilla for Firefox, we believe Chrome could be worth over $1 billion to Google," Piper Jaffray's analysts wrote.

The investment firm's analysts believe Chrome began as -- and still remains -- a way for Google to push browser makers to introduce more advanced features.

"However, given Chrome's success, we believe it could mark a way to keep search distribution costs from other browsers in check long-term," Munster, Clinton and Lebo added.

Search Engine Maneuvers

Under an agreement inked with Mozilla in the middle of last month, Google agreed to pay $900 million over the next three years to ensure that its search engine remains at the top of the list in Mozilla's Firefox browser. Among other things, the move potentially helps to limit the growth of Microsoft Relevant Products/Services's rival search engine Bing even as Google helps to fund additional Firefox browser innovation that benefit the search engine giant's own Web-based services.

"Where Bing may get its next big push is from the arrangement with Facebook, or if Yahoo and its new CEO become a major force again," said Net Applications Executive Vice President Vince Vizzaccaro.

"We've seen it with the introduction of Firefox, then Chrome, and most recently with the huge push to tablets and mobile Relevant Products/Services where Apple is dominating," Vizzaccaro said. Desktop and Mobile Converge

Al Hilwa, program director for applications development software Relevant Products/Services at IDC, predicts that "desktop and mobile Relevant Products/Services application development ecosystems will begin their convergence in 2012, as the industry marches to the release of Windows Relevant Products/Services 8."

Touch Revolution for Enterprise Software

As part of that convergence, Hilwa said, 2012 "will mark the dawn of the touch revolution for enterprise Relevant Products/Services software." He predicts that apps Relevant Products/Services reworked for touch, such as new ones from Adobe, will "spur more developers to think about the truly new possibilities" now available through that kind of interaction.

HTML5 Will Dominate Phones and Tablets

2012 will also be marked by a definitive move toward HTML5, Hilwa predicts, with HTML5 capability for "90 percent of smartphones and tablets" by the end of the year.

Jakarta - Facebook memang masih digdaya dengan sekitar 700 juta pengguna. Google+ yang diharapkan menyainginya belum mampu banyak bicara di tahun 2011. Namun di tahun 2012, kompetisi keduanya diprediksi memanas.

Kedua situs jejaring ini bakal bersaing memperebutkan kue iklan jutaan dollar berikut jumlah pengguna. User pun bisa mengharapkan banyak penambahan fitur baru yang disajikan keduanya.

"Ini adalah perjuangan untuk bertahan bagi Facebook dan relevansi untuk Google. Yang terjadi di tahun 2012 akan membuat perbedaan apakah Facebook masih akan ada di akhir dekade dan apakah Google benar-benar relevan di luar mesin cari," sebut Rob Enderle, analis di Enderle Group.

Facebook sendiri berencana menawarkan saham perdana pada paruh pertama 2012. Hal ini bisa membuat Facebook mendapatkan banyak uang dan lebih kuat dalam melawan Google. Namun bisa pula sebaliknya.

"Momen besar adalah penawaran saham perdana Facebook. Google yang lebih terfokus mungkin bisa membahayakan Facebook jika hal itu gagal," kata Patrick Moorhead dari Moor Insights & Strategy.

Google membuat berita besar dengan kemunculan Google+, dengan berbagai fitur mirip Facebook. Namun demikian, harus diakui bahwa Google+ tidak dapat berbuat banyak di 2011.

"Google+ belum membuat banyak kemajuan melawan Facebook tahun ini," sebut Dan Olds, analis di Gabriel Consulting Group, dikutip detikINET dari ComputerWorld, Sabtu (31/12/2011).

Namun dia memproyeksi Google tidak akan menyerah begitu saja. Kompetisi keduanya diperkirakan akan sangat intens di tahun 2012 seiring kue iklan yang makin besar di situs jejaring sosial.

Neowin and Computerworld report that the current market share of the Microsoft browser is 51.9%, which is a far cry from the dominant numbers it used to get just a few years ago. And that’s not it – the report suggests that this figure could very well fall below 50% if this don’t change drastically which they don’t look like. However, Microsoft did say that with the release of Internet Explorer 9 they would be the dominant browser on Windows 7. On that front, they did meet their expectation but that’s not too much to brag about.

Pengguna Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 harus menelan kekecewaan. Sebuah fitur baru dari Facebook yang masih hangat, Timeline, ternyata tidak bisa dinikmati dari browser yang mereka pakai.

Facebook memutuskan untuk tidak memberikan dukungan Timeline-nya untuk IE7. Jadi ketika pengguna IE7 mengunjungi halaman profile Facebook-nya, ia malah dirujuk untuk beralih ke desain yang lama, alih-alih mendapatkan kesempatan mencicipi desain versi Timeline.

Entah apa alasan Facebook tidak memberikan dukungannya tersebut. Saat menjawab pertanyaan mengenai hal ini di halaman Help Center-nya, Facebook tidak menjabarkan alasannya, namun malah merekomendasikan user untuk memakai browser lain di luar IE7.

Ketidakharmonisan Facebook-Microsoft juga terjadi pada Agustus 2010 lalu. Kala itu Facebook mengumumkan rencana untuk mengakhiri support Facebook Chat pada IE6.

Dikutip detikINET dari Sociable, Senin (2/1/2012), tidak tertutup kemungkinan Facebook akan seluruhnya mengakhiri dukungannya pada browser yang berusia 5 tahun tersebut. Pukulan yang berat bagi Microsoft setelah sebelumnya Google juga menarik supportnya pada IE7 untuk layanan populer mereka seperti Gmail, Google Calendar dan Google Docs.

Market share IE7 secara global memang tengah mengalami penurunan. Browser Microsoft ini hanya mampu meraih share sekitar 4%, hanya 2,2% lebih banyak di atas IE6.

Google Hentikan Proyek Energi Murah

JAKARTA--Google Inc menghentikan sebuah proyek ambisius untuk membuat energi baru dan lebih murah daripada batu bara, sebuah keputusan baru yang dikeluarkan Kepala Eksekutif Google Larry Page untuk mengembangkan Google dengan tenaga efisien.

Google mengatakan pada Selasa telah menghentikan tujuh proyek termasuk Energi Baru dan Lebih murah dari pada Batubara. Layanan ensiklopedia online Wikipedia menyebutnya proyek itu sebagai Knol.

Rencana yang diumumkan Google melalui blog perusahaan menyebutnya sebagai "spring cleaning", sebuah pengumuman yang dibuat Google sejak pendiri Google Page mengambil kendali pada April.

Keputusan itu datang karena Google sedang menghadapi persaingan ketat dalam komputasi mobile dengan Apple dan jejaring sosial dengan Facebook serta beberapa investor menggerutu tingginya pengeluaran Google.

"Intinya, kami sedang menutup sejumlah produk yang tidak berdampak besar, mengintegrasikan sumber lain sebagai fitur tambahan untuk mengembangkan produk dan mengakhiri beberapa langkah yang berbeda, "tulis Wakil Presiden Senior Operasi Google Urs Holzle dalam posting blog.

Google percaya ada insititusi lain yang dapat mengembangkan energi baru lebih baik "ke tingkat berikutnya.

Google mulai melakukan investasi dan penelitian teknologi untuk menurunkan biaya membuat energi baru pada 2007 dengan memfokuskan pada teknologi tenaga surya.

Pada 2009, Perusahaan Green Energy Czar, Bill Weihl, mengatakan kepada Reuters bahwa ia mampu menunjukkan dalam beberapa tahun kedepan sebuah teknologi yang dapat menghasilkan energi baru dengan harga lebih murah daripada batu bara.

"Hal itu bahkan ganjil, lebih atau janggal," kata Weihl pada saat itu. "Dalam tiga tahun, kita bisa memiliki beberapa pembangkit yang menghasilkan megawatt di luar sana."

Android Remains Top Mobile Platform in the U.S.

Web metrics firm comScore reports that 234 million Americans above the age of 13 were using mobile devices during the three months prior to Thanksgiving. The Web metrics firm's new survey of more than 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers also demonstrates that Google's Android remained ahead in the mobile OS platform race with a 46.9 percent market share.

In the U.S. mobile handset market overall, Samsung was the top device maker with a 25.6 percent share. Second-place LG achieved a 20.5 percent share, and Motorola Mobility came in third with a 13.7 percent share.

Apple's share of the market overall rose from 9.8 percent in August to 11.2 percent in November, driven by pent-up demand for the iconic device maker's new iPhone 4S. By contrast, Research In Motion's BlackBerry sales slipped from 7.1 percent in August to 6.5 percent in November.

During the three months through Nov. 24, 72.6 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile devices -- a rise of 2.1 percentage points from last August, comScore reports. And 44.9 percent of all U.S. mobile subscribers downloaded applications during the latest survey period -- up 3.3 percentage points.

Smartphone Ownership Climbs

According to comScore, 91.4 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones at the end of the firm's latest three-month survey period. Smartphone ownership rose by a robust 8 percent between August and November.

Android's share of the smartphone market segment rose 3.1 percentage points between August and November. Though Apple's iOS remained in second place with a 28.7 percent share, the platform's 1.4 percentage point rise did not keep pace with Android's steeper growth trajectory.

RIM ranked third in comScore's latest survey with a 16.6 percent share -- down 3.1 percentage points from August. Microsoft 's Windows Phone platform also lost one-half of a percentage point during the same period.

Though Microsoft's new Mango release hit the U.S. market during the survey period, the Windows Phone platform trailed behind the market leaders with a 5.2 percent share. Additionally, Nokia's Symbian platforms still held on to a 1.5 percent smartphone market share.

Mobile Browsing Growth

The number of handset users accessing social-networking sites or blogs on their devices grew 2.1 percentage points to 33 percent of all U.S. mobile subscribers, comScore said. "Saya kira pantas untuk mengatakan bahwa ini adalah kawasan paling pesat di dunia dalam hal penggunaan internet dan kami memiliki kaitan bisnis Google sangat kuat di sini," kata Direktur Pelaksana Google Asia Tenggara Julian Persaud kepada AFP.

"Oleh karena itu saya kira kami akan mengalokasikan sumber daya yang sejalan dengan di mana kami melaihat peluang terbesar, yang saya kira adalah APAC (Asia Pasifik) dan Asia Tenggara," tambahnya usai seremoni peletakan batu pertama pusat data terbaru itu.

Pusat data yang di Singapura ini akan menjadi Lembah Silikon pertama dari perusahaan itu yang dibangun di Asia Tenggara dan kedua di Asia setelah bangunan fasilitas serupa di Hongkong pekan lalu.

Apa yang dilakukan Google ini menggambarkan bahwa Asia memiliki pertumbuhan jumlah pengguna internet terbesar di dunia.

Namun Google masih harus menghadapi kompetisi sengit, terutama di China di mana mesin-mesin pencari lokal seperti Baidu lebih populer di sana dan terpentalnya Google tahun lalu akibat sensor memaksa Google memindahkan unit internasional mesin pencarinya di China ke kawasan lain.

Google akan menginvestasikan 120 juta dolar AS di fasilitas Singapura yang seluas 2.45 hektare, di mana pembangunannya diperkirakan rampung pada awal 2013.

Google juga akan membangun pusat data Asia ketiganya di Taiwan di luar enam fasilitasnya yang saat ini ada di Amerika Serikat dan dua lainnya di Eropa.

Pusat data Google di Asia ini akan memberi para pengguna Google di kawasan ini layanan yang lebih cepat dan andal, serta memungkinkan perusahaan ini memperkuat aplikasi-aplikasi seperti Gmail tanpa terganggu oleh masalah-masalah menyangkut kapasitas, kata para pejabat perusahaan.

Facebook Messenger for Windows goes Official

When news of the App for Windows was leaked yesterday, it seems like the company decided to capitalise on the leak instead of crying over spilt milk.Â Apparently this was a test version Facebook began testing with a small group of people last month.

In addition to supporting Facebook chat, the App will allow users to check notifications, friends requests and the ubiquitous news ticker which will be positioned on top of the contacts list. While we haven’t yet heard an official announcement on release regarding the App from Facebook, a version is available here.

The Facebook Messenger app is only for Windows machines at the moment, so ifÂ you’reÂ running Linux or a Mac, you will have to wait for a release for your platform.Â New features such as group chat, video calling, limiting chat availability and more will be featured in upcoming versions.

Microsoft Releases First and Only 2011 Out-of-Band Patch

Microsoft on Thursday released its first and only out-of-band patch for 2011. But it's a critical one. MS11-100 addresses a vulnerability in ASP.NET that could allow a denial of service attack.

Dave Forstrom, Microsoft's director of trustworthy computing, said the security update is rated critical. The fix addresses a remote unauthenticated denial of service issue in ASP.NET versions 1.1 and above on all supported versions of .NET Framework. But Forstrom warned that Microsoft is not the only vendor that is vulnerable.

"Of note, the new method of hash collision attacks used to exploit this vulnerability is an industrywide issue affecting various Web platforms, including ASP.NET," Forstrom said. "While we have seen no attacks attempting to exploit this vulnerability, we encourage affected customers to test and deploy the update as soon as possible. Consumers are not vulnerable unless they are running a Web server from their computer ."

Executing Remote Commands

In its security bulletin, Microsoft explained if an unauthenticated attacker sends a specially crafted Web request to a Web site targeted for take down it could open a back door. An attacker who successfully exploits this vulnerability could manipulate the ASP.NET site, executing remote commands at will.

However, in order to exploit this vulnerability an attacker must be able to register an account on the ASP.NET site, and must know an existing user name. Microsoft said customers who have not enabled automatic updating need to check for updates and install this update manually.

The out-of-band patch tackles four issues: CVE-2011-3416, an ASP.NET forms authentication bypass issue rated as critical; CVE-2011-3414, a hash table collision DoS issue rated as important; CVE-2011-3417, an ASP.NET ticket caching vulnerability rated important; and CVE-2011-3415, an insecure redirect vulnerability rated moderate.

How the Fix Works

"Microsoft tested and finished MS11-100 in record time, taking about 30 days for the process of integrating this new vulnerability with the fix that was already scheduled for January 2012," said Wolfgang Kandek, CTO of Qualys. "We consider Microsoft's reaction and implementation speed outstanding, as they were only notified at the tail end of the German security researchers' work."

Qualys is tracking how the other projects and vendors affected, including PHP, Oracle, Python, Ruby and others, are rolling out their patches.

"The bulletin fixes the DoS attack vector by providing a limit to the number of variables that can be submitted for a single HTTP POST request," Kandek said. "The default limit is 500 which should be enough for normal Web applications, but still low enough to neutralize the attack as described by the security researchers in Germany. This addresses the most obvious attack method immediately and leaves the reimplementation of the hash function for a future update."

2012 Tablet Spending Spree By SMBs Predicted

Tablets are high on the 2012 shopping lists of small- to mid-sized business hardware buyers at companies based in the United States, according to NPD Group's latest SMB survey. And Apple's iPad remains the top preferred brand among purchasing decision makers at U.S. companies with fewer than 1,000 employees, which collectively employ 121 million people.

NPD reports that 73 percent of the nation's SMBs overall intend to spend more on tablets in 2012 -- up from 68 percent of the respondents to a similar NDP survey conducted in this year's second quarter. Moreover, 90 percent expect to spend the same amount or more on tablets over the next 12 months.

Though many industry observers have predicted that the rising sales of tablets would lead to PC cannibalization, NPD's latest survey demonstrates that less than 20 percent of SMBs overall expect to cut their PC purchases during the year ahead.

"Spending continues on PCs, and on tablets, and few companies -- even the smallest ones -- are significantly reallocating their spending away from the personal computing needs of their employees," said NPD Vice President Stephen Baker.

"As we head into 2012, the SMB market continues to provide an important source of volume and dollars to the PC market," Baker wrote in a Thursday blog post.

SMB PC Spending Intentions

According to Baker, the heightened interest that SMBs have expressed about acquiring tablets for their employees next year by no means equates to the death of the PC market.

"The combination, however, of the length of time since the Windows 7 launch, the need to spend on higher cost infrastructure, and the increased spending on tablets has clearly put a crimp on PC spending intentions -- especially among the largest firms," Baker explained.

NPD's SMB Technology Monitor reports that 36 percent of the businesses surveyed with fewer than 50 employees said they expect to increase their spending on PCs during the year ahead. Moreover, Baker observed that their average spend of $3,400 would equate to upgrading 10 percent to 15 percent of each firm's PC base.

Only 23 percent of SMBs with 501-999 employees expect to spend more on PCs in 2012, with the average spend approaching $75,000. According to Baker, this would likewise equate to replacing around 10 percent to 15 percent of the installed base at these larger firms. (continued...)

JAKARTA--Tahun 2012 diperkirakan akan menjadi tahun cloud computing atau komputasi awan.Steve Herrod, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) dan Senior Vice President Reasearch & Development, VMware memprediksi penggunaan dan pengadopsian teknologi cloud akan meningkat.

Sebuah riset yang dilakukan Forrester baru-baru ini, yang diluncurkan pada bulan Oktober 2011 oleh VMware, menunjukkan bahwa semakin banyak organisasi yang memilih menerapkan teknologi public dan private cloud (41 persen) – meningkat hampir 10 persen dibandingkan hasil riset tahun lalu (38 persen). Public cloud merupakan pilihan yang kurang disukai karena sebagian besar organisasi di seluruh kawasan melihat teknologi ini kurang aman untuk mengelola data dan aplikasi perusahaan.

Di seluruh kawasan Asia Pasifik, sebanyak 78 persen organisasi kini mempertimbangkan untuk menerapkan virtualisasi sebagai dasar yang penting bagi komputasi awan (cloud computing). The processor dons a media engine that makes possible full 1080p high-definition playback of videos and Blu-ray content. The new Atom also includes additional digital display and output options, including HDMI and DisplayPort.

Intel's integrated Graphics Media Accelerator 3600/3650, combined with an integrated memory controller, works to improve performance and system responsiveness. The new Atom offers graphics performance up to two times faster than Intel's previous generation platform.

Practical Atom Applications

In terms of practical applications, here are a few details: Mobile systems that use the new Atom processors may have up to 10 hours of battery life and weeks of standby. With the new processors, Intel offers stronger overall system performance and up to 20 percent lower power consumption than its previous platform. All this means consumers can use their mobile devices all day without having to plug them into a power source.

Features-wise, Intel relied on its 32nm process technology to bring new functions to the platform. Some of those include a Wireless Display and Wireless Music. With these new features and wireless enabled devices, mobile consumers can share videos or photos wirelessly from their netbooks to a television, or stream music through their home stereo speakers.

A feature called Intel Smart Technology gives mobile users an Instant Internet connection as soon as they open their netbook, and updates e-mail, Twitter and RSS feeds automatically even in sleep mode. And Intel Rapid Start Technology empowers fast resume from standby mode and helps conserve battery life.

Industrial Applications

Intel is betting its new Atom will make mobile devices that run on processors more appealing to a broader audience with its dual-core Intel Atom processor N2600 and Intel Atom processor N2800. With lower thermal design power and power management features like Deeper Sleep and SpeedStep Technology, Intel points to expected interest from industries like healthcare equipment, retail systems and even entry-level digital signage.

In health care settings, Intel said the improved battery life and enhanced graphics means medical professionals can offer better patient care and bring infotainment services to a patient's bedside.

ARBOR technology plans to release a new patient infotainment bedside terminal based on the Intel Atom processor N2800 that helps clinicians improve workflow management and work efficiency, reduce human error and enhance healthcare quality. Patients can also access multimedia entertainment, hospital information and communication services on the system.

Intel said the new Atom's always-on, always-connected capabilities are also ideal for entry-level point-of-sale systems. Atom offers the ability to boot up instantly to serve customers at a moment's notice. Point-of-sale terminals based on the Intel Atom processor D2700 and manufactured by NCR Corporation will be installed in restaurant and retail locations throughout the U.S. beginning in the first quarter of 2012.

353% increase in Android and iOS devices activation on Christmas

Christmas time means a lot of gifts, and in today’s world, a lot of those gifts are shiny new gadgets. And as research firm Flurry Analytics found out, by tracking activity from over 140,ooo apps, Android and iOS based devices saw a significant increase at Christmas.

On the days leading up to Christmas, both Android and iOS devices were activating at around 1.5 million per day around the world. On December 25th, this number rose up by 353% with 6.8 million devices activated world wide. The number of apps downloaded obviously increased as well, with a 125% increase on Christmas compared to the rest of December. In fact, from December 25th till New Year’s, Flurry anticipates global app downloads to exceed 1 billion.

The peak time for app downloads was around 8pm, presumably after dinner. Although, as you can see from the chart below, dinner with family or not, people couldn’t help themselves but start playing with their brand new gadgets as soon as they woke up in the morning.

Sadly there’s no distinction between the number of Android and iOS users, but I’m sure both Google and Apple are happy. So, did any of you get an Android or iOS device this Christmas?

Windows Phone 7 Rapidly Reaches 50,000 Apps

Windows Phone 7 is still a relatively small player in the application vending market, but a bit less so these days as Microsoft shows some impressive growth in offerings for the struggling platform.

Last August, the Windows Phone Marketplace reached a milestone of 30,000 available apps , and now that number seems to have reached 50,000, just over a year since it was first launched in Europe in October 2010.

An independent Web site, All About Windows Phone, citing numbers from its own tracking system, reported on Dec. 27 that the Windows Phone Marketplace "has passed the 50,000 app and games submission mark. Content is being added at the rate of 265 items per day." With a few days left of December, the site said "50,126 items had been published, 17,276 of them added in the last 90 days and 8,010 added in the last 30 days.

Rapid Expansion

The offerings are from 13,002 different publishers, and the pace has accelerated rapidly in recent months as Nokia launches its Windows devices and the platform reaches more countries.

But AAWP pointed out that, just as is the case in other markets, the actual number of Windows offerings is lower than the published figure, with just under 6,000 Windows apps removed by Microsoft or the publisher.

"The 50,000 mark, which has been reached sooner than we estimated, is a key milestone, but more important is the accelerating growth of the Marketplace," wrote AAWP's Rafe Blandford. "It took just over a year to get to 40,000 apps, but just 40 days to add the next 10,000 apps. That bodes well for Windows Phone in 2012."

The soaring mobile market, which includes smartphones, iPods and tablets, has created an app explosion. Earlier this month, Mobilewalla, a research firm specializing in the mobile marketplace, reported that 2,000 apps are posted each day, and in the past year Apple's iTunes App Store increased its offerings from 338,000 to 589,148, while Google's Android Market soared from 115,000 to 319,774. The point of 1 million apps may be near, the firm said.

Whether or not this benefits consumers is questionable since no user has the time or desire to shop through potentially thousands of offerings in a designated category while browsing.

'Robust App Community'

But Avi Greengart of Current Analysis said the Windows Phone 50,000 mark is "an extremely important milestone. Consumers are understandably reluctant to invest in a platform that does not have a robust app community, but 50,000 is a reassuringly large number, so this should definitely help sales."

Greengart added that "Windows Phone also provides an arguably better, more integrated approach to the most common smartphone tasks, and we are starting to see more innovative hardware appear for the platform." But he cautioned that "Windows Phone 7 remains far behind iOS and Android in terms of overall numbers, giving the market leaders an advantage in niche apps. Also, apps are consistently developed for iOS first, for Android second, and for Windows Phone 7...sometime later."

That makes the iPhone the "safest" choice for consumers who are driven primarily by app variety, the analyst said.

Seagate completes acquisition of Samsungâs hard disk drive business

The choice of purchasing a hard disk for your computer just got simpler. Seagate, one of the market leaders in the category, have announced that they have finished the acquisition of the hard disk drive business of Samsung and will now combine their efforts into one.

Dubai â" December 27th, 2011 â" Seagate Technology plc, a world leader in hard disk drives and storage solutions, today announced the closing of the transaction to acquire the hard disk drive (HDD) business of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a world leader in digital consumer electronics and information technology.

Under the terms of the transaction, Seagate has gained select elements of Samsung’s HDD business, including assets, infrastructure and employees that enable Seagate to drive scale and innovation. These assets include Samsung’s leading M8 product line of high-capacity, 2.5-inch HDDs. Samsung employees joining Seagate include a number of senior managers and design-engineering employees from Samsung’s Korea facility, who will focus on development of small form-factor products for the mobile compute market. N.Y. Park, senior vice president and general manager, will oversee Seagate’s product development activities in Korea and serve as country manager of the Korea design center, reporting to Bob Whitmore, Seagate’s executive vice president and CTO.

“Together, Seagate and Samsung have aligned our current and future product development efforts and roadmaps in order to accelerate time-to-market efficiency for new products and position us to better address the increasing demands for storage,” said Steve Luczo, Seagate chairman, president and CEO. “It is an exciting time in the industry with rapidly evolving opportunities in many markets including mobile computing, cloud computing, and solid state storage.”

This transaction was announced in April 2011 along with a series of other agreements between Seagate and Samsung. Seagate is supplying disk drives to Samsung for PCs, notebooks and consumer electronics devices. Samsung is supplying its market-leading semiconductor products for use in Seagate’s enterprise solid state drives (SSDs), solid-state hybrid drives and other products. The companies have also extended and enhanced their existing patent cross-license agreement and have expanded cooperation to co-develop enterprise storage solutions.

“The strategic relationship will open new opportunities for the two companies by mutually complementing each other’s creative technology solutions for a broad diversity of IT applications,” said Oh-Hyun Kwon, vice chairman of Device Solutions of Samsung Electronics.

The transactions and agreements substantially expand Seagate’s customer access in China, Southeast Asia, Brazil, Germany and the Russian Federation. Seagate and Samsung also have been working together to ensure that customers continue to receive a high level of service, support and innovation, including activities to align the two companies’ supply bases and delivery infrastructure. To ease the transition of products and technologies, Seagate will retain certain Samsung HDD products under the Samsung brand name for 12 months, and maintain or establish a number of independent operations including sales staff, key production lines and R&D. Demikian diungkapkan oleh GM Sales and Costumer Service Telkomsel Jabar, Erick Noviantoro saat berbincang dengan detikINET, Senin (26/12/2011).

"Di 2012 targetnya adalah 70 juta pelanggan kita adalah pelanggan broadband," katanya.

Pertumbuhan pelanggan broadband Telkomsel cukup signifikan. Di Jabar saja, saat ini sudah 14 persen pelanggannya merupakan pelanggan broadband.

"Kita terus pacu dengan infrastruktur dan program-program menarik bagi pelanggan. Targetnya Jabar tahun depan adalah 21 persen pelanggan broadband," katanya.

Salah satu upaya Telkomsel untuk memberikan pengalaman broadband kepada pelanggannya adalah dengan menyebar ribuan titik hotspot bersama dengan Telkom.

Di sisi jaringan, Telkomsel Jabar menambah 1.089 node b dengan 250 diantaranya adalah new site tidak termasuk upgrade. "Kita fokus investasi 3G," kata GM Network Operation Telkomsel Jabar Samuel Pasaribu belum lama ini.

Canadian Company Sues RIM for BBM Trademark

As if Research In Motion needed another lump of coal in its Christmas stocking, the BlackBerry maker has received more bad news -- this time on the legal front. RIM may have to spend more money trying to ward off yet another trademark dispute.

Indeed, even as RIM is reeling from the forced name change of its next-generation operating system from BBX to BlackBerry 10, a Canadian company has taken issue with the name of its long-popular instant-messaging platform.

BlackBerry Messenger has been a RIM favorite, allowing BlackBerry users to send each other text messages and pictures through the RIM network and get delivery and read confirmation. Many users just call the service BBM for short, but BBM Canada is looking to Canadian federal court for a remedy.

BBM Canada Willing to Deal

According to a Reuters report, BBM Canada, a company somewhat like Nielsen in that it measures radio and television audiences, plans to argue its case against RIM in February. Jim MacLeod, BBM's CEO, told Reuters he wants RIM to stop advertising the BBM name. But MacLeod also suggested he would be willing to change BBM Canada name -- for a price.

"We have to be practical, they operate worldwide, we don't. But we're not prepared to just walk from our name," MacLeod told Reuters. "I'm sure to a really big company this looks like relatively small numbers, but to us it's a big deal. It's a trademark they don't even own, it's ours."

The timing is noteworthy. BlackBerry has been offering BBM for many years, but recently made a big splash in the RIM world when it rolled out BBM Music. BBM Music is a cloud -based music service for BlackBerry users. RIM was not immediately available for comment.

Should RIM Go Android ?

Some are calling for RIM to sell itself, with Microsoft , Nokia and Amazon being named as potential suitors. But Zeus Kerravala, principal analyst at ZK Research, says he doesn't know if RIM is sellable with its falling subscriber base. As he sees it, RIM needs two things: a leadership change and a strategy change.

"When people buy iPhone and Androids they buy them because they like the operating system. I don't think that's the case with RIM. People like RIM's handsets and the keyboard ," he said. "If I were RIM, I would give up on QNX and put Android on the handsets and become a hardware vendor."

In a smartphone world where apps are vital, that strategy may hold wisdom. Developers are spending most of their attention on the iPhone and Android platforms, and the extra work it takes to build out an app for RIM isn't always worth the effort, especially with RIM's declining market share.

"RIM has lived and died this for so long. It's in their culture. That's why they need a new CEO. I am also not convinced that dual CEOs work anymore," Kerravala said. "RIM has grown to the point to where someone has to take control of that ship and the two guys together aren't doing well, so bringing in someone with Android experience, maybe even someone from Google, might make some sense."

A recent survey from Pew Research shows that spiritually active Americans are just as likely as others to incorporate technology into their daily lives.a

"Some analysts have been concerned that those who have active spiritual lives might not be as engaged with the secular world," noted Jim Jansen, a Senior Fellow at the Pew Internet Project and author of a report on the findings. "We see the opposite. Those who are religiously active are more likely to participate in all kinds of groups and more likely to feel good about their communities. Those who are active in religious groups seem to be joiners. They also are active users of technology."a

As part of the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project, Princeton Survey Research Associates International surveyed 2,303 adults (ages 18 and older) by cellphone and home phones in English and Spanish. a

The report shows that "Americans who are members of religious groups are just as likely as others to use the internet, have broadband at home, use cell phones, use text messaging, and use social networking sites and Twitter."a

And here are some stats to back up those assertions: a

79 percent of Americans who are active in religious groups are internet users, compared with 75% of those not involved with religious groups 86 percent of Americans who are active in religious groups are cellphone users, compared with 80% of those not involved with religious groups 75 percent of religiously active Americans are email users, compared with 68% of those who are not involved with religious groups. 46 percent of these religiously active Americans use social networking sites such as Facebook, compared with 49% of those who are not involved with religious groups. 9 percent of these religiously active Americans use Twitter, compared with 10% of those not involved with religious groups advertisement

While the data did not specifically get into the polled participants' involvement in social networks, Pew researchers did extrapolate some theories about the role online communities play in their lives.a

"It's not in our data, but there is some new scholarship raising the possibility that the social networks of church members might be one of the factors driving this civic engagement," said Lee Rainie, director of the Pew project. "Church can be a place where people who want to be active in groups meet others who share that same interest and they kind of reinforce each other's yearning to get involved with the community around them."a

Dituturkan oleh Nguyen, proses pembuatan pohon elektronik ini memakan waktu dua minggu dengan bantuan 10 orang pekerja. Pengerjaannya dilakukan di selatan Provinsi Tien Giang.

Menurutnya, tujuan dari pembangunan pohon Natal dari ponsel bekas ini tak lain demi mempromosikan kesadaran lingkungan dan bahaya akan limbah ponsel. Pohon ini juga akan dilelang untuk tujuan amal.

Seperti diungkapkan oleh Nguyen Thanh Yen, Administrasi Lingkungan Vietnam, ada jutaan ponsel yang digunakan oleh warga Vietnam dan terus diganti setiap tahunnya. Kebiasaan ini membuat limbah elektronik semakin besar.

People will spend less coin on digital cameras this holiday season as they increasingly rely on smartphone cameras to capture both spontaneous moments and vacation shots, a survey from the research firm NPD Group suggests.

While the results should not surprise, given the higher quality cameras increasingly built into popular phones -- the iPhone 4S packs an 8-megapixel model, up from 5 on the iPhone 4 -- the survey offers a quantified look at how much the smartphone market is eating into the low-end camera market.

Who Needs A Camcorder?

The percentage of photos taken with a smartphone by a sample group answering online questions rose from 17 last year to 27, while the share of photos taken by camera dropped from 52 percent to 44 percent.

In separate findings, NPD's Retail Tracking Service found that so-called "point-and-shoot" camera sales fell 17 percent in units and 18 percent in dollars for the first 11 months of 2011. The drop in pocket camcorder sales was slightly lower, 13 percent in units, but steeper in dollars, 27 percent, while flash camcorders declined 8 percent in units and 10 percent in dollars.

Just over 30 percent of respondents said they now use phones for taking photos while on vacation, and just over 50 percent said they use phones for casual photos. The numbers were similar for video , with a higher number, about 55 percent, using their handy smartphones to capture spontaneous moments for posterity (or YouTube).

"Thanks to mobile phones, more pictures are being taken than ever before," said Liz Cutting, executive director and senior imaging analyst at NPD, in releasing the results. "Consumers who use their mobile phones to take pictures and video were more likely to do so instead of their camera when capturing spontaneous moments, but for important events, single purpose cameras or camcorders are still largely the device of choice."

The survey was taken Nov. 11-21 from a sample of adults over 18 and teens ages 13-17.

Big Potential

Manufacturers and carriers are increasingly seeing the value of good cameras as a selling point and differentiator. In June, HTC and T-Mobile released the MyTouch 4G , with an 8-megapixel camera, promising no shutter lag -- a big drawback of many digital cameras. With its fast data speed, the MyTouch is a good option for taking good pictures and sharing them quickly, T-Mobile said at the time.

"Smartphone cameras are getting good enough that people will only buy a digital camera if it is much better," said analyst Gerry Purdy of MobileTrax. The benefits of a dedicated, higher-end camera over a phone, he said are optical zoom, available only on select phones, large lens capture and better digital image capture chips.

"It's a trade-off of fidelity vs. convenience," Purdy said. "People want to have a really good camera for a wedding, but convenience is going to drive the popularity of camera phones, which are good enough for most situations."

Jakarta - PT Inti dan TelkomSigma mendatangi kantor Badan Regulasi Telekomunikasi Indonesia (BRTI) untuk memberikan klarifikasi terkait masuknya mereka dalam daftar nama content provider (CP) dengan shortcode tak berizin.

"Sehabis Telkom, kita kedatangan juga dari PT Inti. Sama-sama klarifikasi layanan dia. Kesimpulan juga sama masih akan dipelajari lebih jauh," kata anggota BRTI M Ridwan Effendi kepada detikINET, Jumat (23/12/2012).

Seperti diberitakan sebelumnya, nama PT Inti dan TelkomSigma (Sigma Cipta Caraka) masuk dalam daftar aduan nama CP dengan shortcode tak berizin dari BRTI. Inti menggunakan shortcode A88 dan TelkomSigma menggunakan shortcode 3388.

Dalam kesempatan terpisah, keduanya mengklaim bahwa layanan dengan shortcode tersebut bukan digunakan untuk kepentingan SMS premium layaknya yang diselenggarakan CP pada umumnya.

TelkomSigma mengatakan bahwa 3388 digunakan hanya untuk IT platform layanan SMS banking dari infrastruktur SERA Systems yang disediakannya.

Sedangkan A88 dari PT Inti merupakan shortcode untuk infrastruktur sistem perangkat layanan Voice SMS bersama mitranya, XL Axiata.

Menanti Makin Merakyatnya Teknologi 'Awan' di 2012

Jakarta - Berbagai vendor pada tahun 2011 sejatinya terbilang gencar dalam mempromosikan kemampuan teknologi komputasi awan (cloud computing). Namun apakah hal itu benar-benar dapat diikuti dunia industri? Sepertinya masih sulit diprediksi.

Namun keyakinan yang sama muncul kala menyambut tahun 2012. Dimana teknologi awan diyakini akan memiliki peran penting dalam mengendalikan tren teknologi.

Menurut Steve Herrod, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) dan Senior Vice President Reasearch & Development VMware, pada 2012 penggunaan dan pengadopsian teknologi awan akan meningkat.

Hal ini didasari dari sebuah riset yang dilakukan Forrester pada Oktober 2011 lalu dimana menunjukkan bahwa semakin banyak organisasi yang memilih menerapkan teknologi public dan private cloud dengan presentase 41%. Jumlah ini meningkat hampir 10% dibandingkan hasil riset tahun lalu (38%).

Public cloud sendiri, dinilai Herrord, sejatinya merupakan pilihan yang kurang disukai karena sebagian besar organisasi di seluruh kawasan melihat teknologi ini kurang aman untuk mengelola data dan aplikasi perusahaan.

Di kawasan Asia Pasifik, sebanyak 78% organisasi kini dinilai mempertimbangkan untuk menerapkan virtualisasi sebagai dasar yang penting bagi komputasi awan. Pengadopsian teknologi virtual yang tertinggi dilakukan oleh perusahaan asuransi (83%), kemudian diikuti oleh perusahaan yang bergerak di sektor perbankan atau keuangan (81%) dengan sebagian besar kini telah mengadopsi komputasi awan.

Perusahaan saat ini dikatakan memiliki pemahaman yang lebih baik mengenai dampak positif dari penerapan komputasi awan terhadap perkembangan bisnis mereka. Dalam mengarungi perjalanan komputasi awan -- baik melalui model privat maupun hybrid, perusahaan kini semakin sadar bahwa tidak ada 'awan' yang pas untuk semua kebutuhan.

Dalam hal aplikasi, Herrord juga melihat adanya pergeseran tipe infrastruktur aplikasi yang dipakai. Melihat realita aplikasi berbasis website atau mobile modern, dengan pola penggunaan yang dinamis, dibutuhkan pendekatan arsitektural baru.

Dimana teknologi itu harus bisa fleksibel di setiap tier aplikasi itu sehingga saat pengguna mengaksesnya, infrastruktur aplikasi akan langsung menyesuaikan untuk memenuhi permintaan penggunaan.

Pendekatan pengembangan aplikasi ke depan akan memiliki ciri-ciri berikut:
-. Mengembangkan dengan menggunakan kerangka modern.
-. Memanfaatkan server aplikasi ringan yang dioptimalkan untuk platform infrastruktur yang akan memfasilitasi pemasangan teknologi tersebut.
-. Menyimpan sesi di cache data yang fleksibel sehingga Anda dapat menyesuaikan server aplikasi Anda dengan mudah dan sederhana.
-. Menggunakan teknologi pengiriman pesan berbasis cloud untuk mengintegrasikan aplikasi secara mudah.
-. Pada akhirnya, memperkenalkan layer akses terhadap data yang dapat disesuaikan mengingat ini merupakan elemen yang paling penting.

Pendekatan arsitektural juga dinilai dapat diterapkan dengan menggunakan virtualisasi. Pembuatan mesin virtual memungkinkan pengguna untuk membangun arsitektur secara sederhana dan menghilangkan kebutuhan untuk peningkatan kapasitas VM secara terus-menerus. Hal ini menekankan pada kesederhanaan dan komponen ringan yang dapat menyesuaikan dengan mudah.

Pengguna dapat memulai migrasi cloud dengan mencari aplikasi yang dapat berbagi beberapa atau bahkan semua dari kelima karakteristik berikut ini:

3 Aplikasi Pembaca Layar Gratisan untuk Tunanetra

Jakarta - Aplikasi pembaca layar (screen reader) adalah piranti lunak yang digunakan tunanetra untuk mengoperasikan komputer. Sayangnya, rata-rata screen reader komersial harganya selangit, sehingga banyak tunanetra yang hanya dapat merasakan versi demonya saja. Nah, kali ini penulis ingin berbagi informasi tentang beberapa pembaca layar gratisan yang dapat dimanfaatkan tunanetra tanpa perlu mengeluarkan biaya sepeser pun!

Kalau boleh dibilang, screen reader adalah "mata" bagi tunanetra dalam mengoperasikan komputer. Dengan aplikasi tersebut, tunanetra dapat memperoleh informasi tentang teks yang tertera di layar monitor. Teks tersebut diubah menjadi suara menggunakan teknologi speech synthesizer, sehingga hasilnya dapat didengar oleh tunanetra.

Dengan demikian, sudah dapat dipastikan kalau akses informasi bagi tunanetra pun semakin terbuka. Berkat bantuan screen reader, mereka dapat browsing, bekerja, melakukan presentasi, bahkan menikmati hiburan menggunakan PC atau Notebook.

Namun, ternyata untuk memperoleh sebuah screen reader biayanya lumayan mahal. Yang paling murah harganya sekitar USD 399, dan yang kebanyakan dipakai harganya bisa melampaui USD 1.000. Untuk nilai sebesar itu, barangkali hanya institusi besar atau kalangan tertentu saja yang dapat membelinya, sementara individu tunanetra barangkali harus mengorbankan sepuluh atau dua puluh bulan gaji untuk dapat membelinya.

Sebagai alternatif, biasanya tunanetra menggunakan versi demo dari screen reader komersial. Versi demo tersebut memungkinkan tunanetra memakai screen reader selama 30 atau 40 menit. Setelah itu, screen reader akan non-aktif dan untuk mengaktifkannya kembali komputer harus di-restart. Tentu saja ini sebuah praktek yang kurang praktis.

Berikut ini adalah beberapa screen reader gratisan yang dapat dijadikan sebagai solusi permasalahan di atas. Meski fitur-fiturnya tak selengkap screen reader komersial, namun sudah cukup untuk digunakan sebagai alat bantu aktivitas berkomputer sehari-hari.

Namun, penulis tak akan membahas secara terperinci mengingat hal tersebut akan memanjangkan artikel ini. Penulis hanya ingin mengenalkan saja, sehingga masyarakat dapat membagikan informasi ini pada yang membutuhkan.

Adapun kriteria yang penulis gunakan dalam memilih screen reader gratisan ini adalah sebagai berikut:

- Selalu update. Beberapa screen reader gratisan sudah tumbang, sehingga tidak lagi update, dan tentu saja tidak dapat digunakan pada sistem operasi terkini.

- Stabil. Screen reader gratisan ini berjalan mulus, setidaknya untuk komputer dengan spesifikasi terkini.

- Mendukung aktivitas berkomputer umum (Navigasi sistem operasi, aplikasi Office, dan internet). Penulis menjamin tunanetra sudah dapat menikmati hiburan atau bekerja di kantor dengan memanfaatkan screen reader gratisan ini.

1. Voice Over

Voice Over adalah screen reader bawaan yang dibuat untuk produk keluaran Apple, baik Mac maupun iDevice. Screen reader ini dapat langsung dipakai saat Mac atau iDevice diaktifkan.

Untuk aplikasi pihak pertama seperti program bawaan sistem operasi, Voice Over berjalan lancar tanpa hambatan. Dengan kata lain, tunanetra tak akan menemui kesulitan berarti dalam mengakses fitur dasar perangkatnya.

Mac (iMac, Macbook): Tekan shortcut Command+F5 atau aktifkan dari menu pengaturan (aksesibilitas).

iDevice (iPod, iPhone, iPad): Aktifkan di pilihan Setting > General > Accessibility. Bisa juga diaktifkan dari iTunes melalui pilihan Universal Access (setelah iDevice tersambung ke PC atau Notebook).

2. System Access To Go

System Access To Go adalah screen reader gratisan dari versi komersialnya, System Access. Untuk dapat menggunakannya diperlukan koneksi internet, karena screen reader ini tidak di-install, melainkan berjalan secara online.

Untuk menjalankannya, silakan buka situs www.satogo.com. Nanti akan terdengar suara yang akan memandu pengguna tunanetra dalam memasang System Access To Go.

System Access To Go dapat menangani dengan baik aplikasi bawaan Windows, dan beberapa aplikasi umum seperti Microsoft Office, WinAmp, dan Skype.

Nah, screen reader ini sangat berguna bila tunanetra bepergian ke sarana umum seperti perpustakaan atau warnet. System Access To Go tidak membutuhkan instalasi, maka komputer yang digunakan sebagai host tidak perlu diutak-atik.

Namun, barangkali akan sedikit sulit apabila komputer hostnya tidak memberi hak akses untuk mengeksekusi file EXE, karena System Access To Go perlu download dan mengeksekusi file aplikasi utamanya (besaran 3MB).

Kelemahan dari System Access To Go, tentu saja, terletak pada soal koneksi internet itu sendiri. Kalau koneksinya lambat atau putus, maka System Access To Go akan membisu seribu bahasa, dan hal itu tentu saja membuat tunanetra kehilangan kontak dengan komputernya.

3. NVDA (Non Visual Desktop Access)

NVDA adalah screen reader berlisensi open source yang dibuat oleh NV Access. Untuk mendapatkannya, silakan akses situsnya di www.nvda-project.org.

Meski gratisan, kemampuan NVDA boleh diacungi jempol. Selain memiliki fungsi yang hampir sama dengan System Access To Go, NVDA pun menyediakan fitur yang memungkinkan tunanetra mengoperasikan mouse (bila mouse digerakkan akan terdengar suara yang mengindikasikan posisi mouse).

NVDA tersedia dalam dua rasa, installer dan portable. Yang installer dapat diinstal pada PC, dan yang portable dapat di-copy ke flash disk dan dapat dijalankan tanpa perlu instalasi.

Lagi-lagi ini sangat berguna bila tunanetra bepergian ke sarana umum yang komputernya tidak dilengkapi screen reader, karena NVDA dapat langsung dijalankan (butuh hak akses eksekusi EXE).

Opini penulis

Dengan adanya artikel ini, diharapkan semakin banyak masyarakat Indonesia yang tahu bagaimana memberi akses tunanetra terhadap dunia informasi melalui komputer dengan biaya 0.000. Setidaknya hal ini berlaku untuk pengadaan screen reader sebagai sarana interaksi tunanetra dan komputer.

Dengan demikian, tunanetra yang tinggal di daerah terpencil atau kurang mampu pun sudah dapat berkomputer. Cukup sediakan komputer spesifikasi netbook dan pasangkan salah satu pembaca layar gratisan, dan tunanetra pun sudah dapat menggunakannya.

Di dunia pendidikan, kesempatan tunanetra untuk ikut belajar dengan memanfaatkan komputer pun semakin terbuka. Pihak sekolah tak harus mengeluarkan dana berlebih untuk menyediakan pembaca layar, karena aplikasi yang penulis sebutkan di atas sudah dapat menangani aplikasi yang umum digunakan untuk menuntaskan tugas-tugas sekolah.

Informasi ini juga dapat disosialisasikan pada pengelola sarana umum seperti perpustakaan atau warnet. Tentunya tidak terlalu sulit untuk memasang pembaca layar gratisan yang ukurannya relatif kecil. Jadi, andaikan ada pengunjung tunanetra yang datang, pihak pengelola dapat menghidupkan pembaca layar tersebut dan tunanetra pun dapat memanfaatkan fasilitas umum tersebut.

Hal terbesar yang penulis dan rekan-rekan tunanetra lain impikan, tentu saja, adalah terciptanya kesempatan akses informasi yang lebih besar bagi tunanetra. Screen reader gratisan diharapkan dapat menjadi salah satu solusi dalam mewujudkan impian tersebut.

Nimbula said its Migration Service is designed for those companies that start out in a public cloud infrastructure, such as Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), because they want to avoid initial capital investment or they need to address rapid growth, or both. After the initial growth phase, and once they have a handle on the workload required, an internal cloud is often planned in order to control expenses and to complement the public workload.

'A Seamless Migration'

Nimbula Director of Professional Services Nishan Sathyanarayan said in a statement that customers often look to a hybrid deployment model, with both their own private cloud as well as public infrastructure. Through the technical design and migration plan offered by Nimbula, he said, "our customers can confidently execute a seamless migration into a robust and cost-effective private or hybrid cloud solution and balance their investment in public clouds."

Nimbula's key strategic focus is for enterprises to use public clouds when fast growth of applications is required. Once the workload and needs have become stable, Nimbula sees it making more sense to migrate to an internal cloud. If the app still has unpredictable bursts of activity, appropriately called cloudbursts, that component might be left in the public cloud.

The Nimbula service provides consultants to help customers design and build a commodity cloud in-house, without the normal investment required, by using existing resources wherever possible. Typically, this would incorporate x86 servers and Nimbula's cloud system software , and the customer does the actual implementation.

One of those offerings is the Nimbula Director Jumpstart package. The Jumpstart package includes deployment of a customized showcase or proof-of-concept environment for demonstration purposes, to build internal company support.

'Cloud Operating System'

The Director product is one entry in a new category known as a "cloud operating system," and it provides a view of an automated compute and storage cloud, so that the operational and hardware complexity is separated from the virtual data center management solution. A cloud operating system treats all resources, in private or in public clouds, as one system that is optimized for required workloads.

The company said that Director is used by both enterprises and service providers. Key uses by enterprises include deploying a private cloud for application development and testing, hosting of such apps as Web 2.0 or e-commerce, or controlling use of public clouds through federation functionality in Director. Service providers use Director for implementing their own public clouds.

Nimbula's founders helped build Amazon EC2. Chris Pinkham, now Nimbula CEO, was vice president of engineering at Amazon Web services, and Willem van Biljon, now Nimbula vice president of products, was involved with the business plan for EC2.

Some wags may think this is the best use of social media ever: Helping to light up a 30-foot Christmas tree in Toronto's Union Station.a

"The tree takes positive Christmas chatter in social media and uses the data to light up the 30,000 LED lights strung around it," explains Sheldon Levine of Sysomos on the company's blog:a

Each color of light represents Christmas spirit coming from a different social channel. White lights represent social networks like Twitter and public Facebook statuses, red for blog and forum posts, green for online news and blue lights for messages sent through text [directly to] ChristmasSpiritTree.ca. The more social media spirit that comes in at one time the brighter the tree shines. As well, there are a few Easter egg words (#santa, #snowflake, #magic) that you can send to the tree to make it do some pretty fancy light patterns.a

Toronto-based Sysomos, which does social media analytics (and data mining), used a list of 50 Christmas keywords (like Santa or elf) captured "from social media talk across Canada. We then analyze the sentiment of the messages pulled in. From there all the positive mentions get sent through an API to a machine designed to turn the social media Christmas data into a spectacular light show," Levine wrote.a

The project was funded by north-of-the-border superstore Canadian Tire.a

Jakarta - Dunia sedang menghadapi era komputer tablet. Menurut berbagai riset, perangkat mobile berbasis layar sentuh ini akan terus tumbuh pesat penjualannya.

"Jumlah penjualan komputer tablet diestimasi mencapai 900 juta pada tahun 2016," tukas Pieter Lydian, Country Manager Dell Indonesia di Menara BCA, Kamis (22/12/2011).

Estimasi penjualan yang hampir mencapai 1 miliar unit tersebut berdasarkan analisis dari biro riset Gartner. Salah satu faktor pemicunya adalah semakin banyaknya generasi muda yang melek teknologi.

Riset terpisah oleh IDC menyebutkan bahwa pada tahun 2012 mendatang, komputer tablet bersama smartphone akan berjaya. Kombinasi penjualan keduanya akan melampaui pengapalan komputer PC.

"Perangkat mobile juga akan membukukan pendapatan besar dari sektor aplikasi karena diproyeksi ada 86 miliar kali download aplikasi," sebut Lydian mengutip data IDC.

Bagi para vendor industri sendiri, tahun 2012 dipandang menjanjikan. Sebab pertumbuhan ekonomi diproyeksi akan cukup baik.

"Saat ini memang terjadi krisis Eropa namun sepertinya akan segera ada solusi dalam waktu dekat. Karenanya tahun depan ekonomi diprediksi membaik," ucap Lydian.

AT&T Growth Plans Pressured by Verizon Spectrum Deals

With its bid for T-Mobile officially over, AT&T faces a spectrum crunch exacerbated by the slowness of regulators to approve its earlier spectrum deal with Qualcomm, even as the wireless carrier is forced to part with advanced wireless solutions spectrum.

AT&T's loss of AWS spectrum is a break-up provision in the merger contract it signed with T-Mobile's parent company, Deutsche Telekom, last March. T-Mobile's AWS spectrum windfall, courtesy of AT&T, will provide coverage in 128 U.S. cellular markets, including Los Angeles, Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco, and Seattle.

Rival Verizon Wireless has already made several moves to take advantage of AT&T's AWS spectrum loss. Cox Communications said last Friday that it has agreed to sell Verizon its 20 megahertz AWS spectrum licenses covering 28 million points of presence (PoP) in exchange for $315 million.

"These agreements provide Cox customers with key enablers to mobility , such as access to Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE network and iconic wireless devices," said Cox Communications President Pat Esser.

Though AT&T is facing a spectrum crunch, "it doesn't strike me that ATT will capitulate to Verizon Wireless," said Lisa Pierce, Gartner 's managing vice president of unified communications and network services.

"The loss of T-Mobile will spur ATT's LTE-related capital expenditure spending -- to rapidly implement LTE, LTE-Advanced and VoLTE -- especially on the 700 megahertz band," Pierce said in an e-mail Thursday. "This likely shift is welcome news to ATT's key network suppliers."

A Full LTE Blitz

AT&T's cash reserves will take a hit when AT&T posts a pretax accounting charge of $4 billion at the end of the fourth quarter to reflect the T-Mobile deal's break-up considerations. Still, AT&T had over $10 billion cash on hand at the end of the third quarter of 2011.

"Our strong cash flow gives us the flexibility to invest in our business , to retire debt and to continue to return substantial value to shareholders," AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson told investors last October. (continued...)

Internet memes aren't just for chuckles around the virtual water cooler — they can also be vital accessories in a moment that lasts a lifetime: the marriage proposal. Since everything that can be documented is documented, why not point cameras at this once intimate moment between two people, for others to have and to hold, for ever and always?a

The "Meme Proposal" between two young people, Tim and Audrey, takes place just outside a restaurant in Kuala Lumpur on Nov. 30, shot and edited by professional film crew Crazy Monkey Studio. And reminiscent of "Love Actually" (nice call, Gizmodo!), young Tim stands outside a glass door, looking in at his girlfriend Audrey, who's sitting with her friends eating dinner.a

And to the soundtrack of Christina Perri's "A Thousand Years" (which is itself on the soundtrack of the "Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1" soundtrack), Tim produces big flashcards that use memes to illustrate his point that though he may have been apprehensive about marriage for awhile, he is ready to take the plunge with his soulmate. And, it turns out, Tim is some kind of big blogger type in Asia, judging from his blog and a post about attending the a recent blog awards event — the Oscar equivalent for Asia-Pacific bloggers — with his "Shorty" (Audrey). She also blogs, and recounts all the details of the proposal on her blog.a

I've been to a lot of weddings. I mean a lot. Several a year, for about 15 years now. And for the most part, they're first marriages. But after so many friends have already tied the knot, it's easy to forget that first blush (and rush) of hope for rest-of-your-life happiness that comes with the marriage proposal.a

Intel’s Atom powered smartphones and tablets shown off

Intel has been behind the curve when it comes to mobile processors in smartphones and tablets. While their success in the desktop and mobile processors for laptops is undeniable, other manufacturers like ARM, Texas Instruments and Nvidia have taken up huge chunks of this incredibly growing market.

Recently Intel provided reference design smartphones and tablets to variousÂ manufacturerÂ with their ‘Medfield’ processor powering Android Gingerbread.Â ”We expect products based on these to be announced in the first half of 2012,” said Stephen Smith, vice president of Intel’s architecture group to Technology ReviewÂ who were lucky enough to check out the prototype in person.

“The phone was powerful and pleasing to use, on a par with the latest iPhone and Android handsets. It could play Blu-Ray-quality video and stream it to a TV if desired; Web browsing was smooth and fast. Smith says Intel has built circuits into the Medfield chip specifically to speed up Android apps and Web browsing.” Apparently the Medfield wasÂ optimizedÂ to improve the browsing experience on Android smartphones, as well as running apps faster.

As far as the Medfield powered tablet is concerned, it was seen running Android Ice Cream Sandwich. While the screen size wasÂ slightlyÂ larger than the iPad 2, it was just as thin and light. “They can use as much or as little of the reference design as they like,” says Smith.

“This is our first offering that’s truly a single chip,” says Smith. The 32nm process is smaller than the currently popular 40nm process used by ARM processors, which means the Medfield runs much cooler and with lesser energy draw than its current competitors.

We will probably start production prototypes from various manufacturers as early as next month during CES, with large scale retail units out in the next 6 to 7 months. Could, the Medfield powered Android Ice Cream Sandwich tablet be the one hinted by Eric Schmidt as Google’s tablet of choice coming out in the next 6 months?

Google activating 700k Android smartphones every day

Google’s platform chief, Andy Rubin, made a post on his Google+ profile that there are 700,000 Android smartphones being activated everyday.

That’s a ridiculously large number, especially considering that just in Feb Eric Schmidt reported the daily activation number as 350k. In July this figure jumped to 500k activationsÂ every day. Â In a mere 10 months the number of Android devices being activated dailyÂ has literally doubled. But what exactly does activation of an Android handset mean?

For thoseÂ inquiringÂ minds Andy wrote,Â ”…and for those wondering, we count each device only once (ie, we don’t count re-sold devices), and “activations” means you go into a store, buy a device, put it on the network by subscribing to a wireless service.“

Researchers Develop Self-Healing Electronic Circuits

Self-healing electronic circuits. That 21st-century concept, which could extend the usable lifespan of electronic devices and batteries, has been accomplished by a team of researchers at the University of Illinois.

The researchers, who had previously created self-healing polymers, have now implemented a similar approach for circuits. Microcapsules, with diameters as small as 10 microns, reside above a gold circuit line and, when a crack appears in the circuit, the microcapsules rupture and release liquid metal that repairs the break. The research is described in a paper published in the journal Advanced Materials.

'You Can't See It'

According to the researchers, the break lasts only for about a hundred microseconds before it is healed.

"It's so fast that you can't see it," said co-team leader and aerospace engineering professor Scott White in a video released by the university. "You need special equipment to even detect that there was failure" and a healing process, he added.

The team reported that 90 percent of test samples were restored to 99 percent of their original conductivity with this technique.

Materials science and engineering professor and co-team leader Nancy Sottos told news media that there are an unlimited number of applications, especially for mission-critical systems. She noted that multilayer integrated circuits and batteries cannot readily be opened and repaired, and currently it's more efficient -- but more costly in time and money -- to simply replace the circuit or battery. With this self-healing technique, devices and batteries could potentially last much longer.

She pointed out that autonomous healing techniques can take care of a break that occurs in the "miles and miles of conductive wire" in a military aircraft or a spacecraft. No human intervention is required. The other strength of the technique is that it is localized, so that the microcapsules do their job only at the point of the crack, rather than throughout the entire circuit.

'What's Really Cool....'

Chemistry professor Jeffrey Moore, a co-author of the paper, noted in a statement that this approach "simplifies the system." Instead of having to build in redundancies or a sensory diagnostics system, he said, "this material is designed to take care of the problem itself."

White said that "what's really cool" about this self-healing system is that it's "the first example of taking the microcapsule-based healing approach and applying it to a new function." Previously, he said, this approach and similar ones were focused on structural repair, but this is directed at "conductivity restoration," and shows that the overall self-healing concept can be applied to other needs.

The next targets include using the microcapsules to control conductivity. In particular, the researchers want to apply the technology to batteries, in order to improve their safety and longevity.

The research was funded by U.S. Department of Energy, and key team members Moore, Sottos, and White are affiliated with the University of Illinois' Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology.

"Hasbro akan terus melindungi produknya dan menindak tegas siapapun yang menyalahgunakannya, dan Asus telah melanggar hak kekayaan intelektual demi keuntungan mereka sendiri," tulis pernyataan Hasbro, yang dikutip detikINET dari Cnet, Kamis (22/12/2011).

Hasbro mengklaim bahwa nama Transformers dan Optimus Prime sudah termasuk dalam perlindungan hak cipta, dan tidak bisa digunakan secara bebas tanpa seizin pemiliknya.

Asus Transformer Prime sendiri merupakan tablet PC 10,3 inch yang digadang bakal sukses di pasaran. Meski tak bisa berubah sebagai robot, namun menurut Hasbro penggunaan nama itu sudah termasuk salah satu bentuk penyalahgunaan.

Google says there are 700,000 Android activations a day

Andy Rubin, Google's director of mobile platforms, says there are "now over 700,000 Android devices activated every day," sharing the news on Google's social networking site, G+. (Rubin put the words "Bureau of Android Statistics" under his name on the site.)a

"... and for those wondering, we count each device only once (ie, we don't count re-sold devices), and 'activations' means you go into a store, buy a device, put it on the network by subscribing to a wireless service" for Android on a phone or tablet, he added, a few minutes after his original post.a

The numbers are more than double those reported by Google a year ago, when the company said there were 300,000 Android devices being activated daily.a

Google's wireless competitors, including Apple, don't share such activation stats. But in order to give you a bit of context, we crunched a daily sales number for Apple's iPads and iPhones. Based on the last Apple quarterly report, approximately 315,000 were sold every day during the quarter ending Sept. 24.a

Android's share of the smartphone market has continued to climb. Last month, The NPD Group said Android was on 44 percent of all smartphones purchased in the U.S. in the third quarter, an increase of 11 percent from the second quarter. Apple's iOS "held relatively steady versus last quarter, rising one percentage point to 23 percent; RIM OS, fell to third position, declining from 28 percent to 22 percent."a

Rubin's comments on G+ have drawn lots of "yays" from Android users, and some "nays" from those frustrated by the different versions of Android operating systems on phones, and the inability to update the operating system depending on the version and the phone they have.a

Rubin's G+ post served as a means for users to vent. One, named Gaurang Dave, wrote: "I too am an Android user and huge fan of the operating system ... but my only issue is the OS upgrade ... I just bought a new device couple of months ago ... and now am sure that there is no way I can update the OS ... unless I root it and risk bricking my phone ... Andy please fix this ... and find a way so that user(s) can easily upgrade their phone(s)."a

Budapes, Hungaria - 'Steve Jobs' menyapa warga Budapes, Hungaria. Ya, tentu saja itu hanyalah dalam bentuk patung perunggu yang dibuat sebuah perusahaan software Graphisoft.

Kini pengerjaan patung seberat 220 kg tersebut sudah selesai dan telah resmi diperkenalkan ke publik. Ia ditempatkan di kompeks industri IT di Budapes.

Latar belakang dari pembuatan patung ini adalah lantaran merasa hutang budi si punya hajat -- Graphisoft -- kepada bos Apple yang telah tiada tersebut. Alhasil, rasa penghormatan dalam bentuk patung pun diwujudkannya.

Graphisoft memang pernah disokong oleh Apple ketika tengah goyah di periode 1980-an. "Kala perusahaan kami masih muda dan memiliki keterbatasan, Apple memberi bantuan modal dan komputer," tulis Graphisoft, dikutip detikINET dari PC Mag.

"Jobs merupakan sosok yang sangat percaya dengan teknologi, dan ia menawarkan bantuan finansial dan marketing kepada perusahaan Graphisoft," imbuh Akos Pfemeter, Direktur Global Marketing Graphisoft.

Lalu bagaimana kira-kira bentuk dari patung Steve Jobs tersebut. Ini hasilnya yang merupakan karya pematung Erno Toth yang dilansir Reuters.

Inilah sang pematung -- Erno Toth -- yang membuat patung Steve Jobs.

Patung Jobs diabadikan lewat karya sang inovator, iPad 2.

Toth coba membuat patungnya seidentik mungkin dengan gaya keseharian Jobs. Mulai dari kacamata hingga baju turtle neck khas Jobs turut dilekatkan di patung perunggu itu.

Papua - Program pembangunan Desa Informasi merambah Papua, dimana ada 8 desa yang diresmikan Menkominfo Tifatul Sembiring. "Papua harus maju, harus mau mengubah nasib," tegas Tifatul.

Menteri yang gemar berpantun itu mengatakan bahwa rakyat Papua jangan sampai ketinggalan dari masyarakat propinsi-propinsi lain. Kemajuan Papua bisa dipacu setara dengan daerah-daerah lain. Bahkan beberapa putra Papua sudah membuktikan diri dengan berhasil meraih juara dalam lomba TIK yang diadakan oleh Kementerian Kominfo.

"Hari ini harus lebih baik dari kemarin dan hari esok harus lebih baik dari hari ini. Tuhan tidak akan mengubah nasib suatu bangsa, kalau bangsa itu tidak mau mengubah diri mereka masing-masing," tutur Tifatul.

Hal itu disampaikannya saat peresmian 8 Desa Informasi yang dipusatkan di distrik Arso, Kabupaten Keerom, Papua, Rabu (21/12/2011). Rinciannya adalah: 2 desa di Kabupaten Keerom, 2 desa di Merauke, 2 desa di Manokwari dan 2 desa di Talaud, Sulawesi Utara.

Desa informasi adalah program pembangunan infrastruktur komunikasi dan informasi berupa: telepon masuk desa, pusat layanan internet kecamatan (PLIK), mobile-PLIK, televisi satelit, radio komunitas serta komunitas informasi masyarakat (KIM). Total Desa Informasi yang telah dibangun Kominfo tahun ini berjumlah 84 desa.

"Dengan tersedianya fasilitas desa informasi ini, ke depan diharapkan akan dapat mengurangi kesenjangan digital antara kota besar dengan daerah terpencil," imbuh Tifatul.

Menteri juga mewanti-wanti agar masyarakat Papua, betul-betul menjaga stabilitas keamanan, sebab membangun itu butuh stabilitas.

"Ketika kondisi daerah aman, ekonomi akan berkembang dan maju. Turis akan datang. Hotel, restoran, penjualan souvenir, dan jasa-jasa lain akan tumbuh berkembang," lanjutnya.

Saat diadakan video conference di Keerom - Papua, di antara pengguna mengajukan permintaan tambahan fasilitas M-PLIK, dan Tifatul berjanji akan memenuhinya, dengan syarat fasilitas-fasilitas yang ada sekarang benar-benar digunakan untuk hal positif.

Verizon Wireless Outages Persist Without Explanation

Verizon Wireless may understand what Research In Motion felt a couple of months ago, as widespread outages are making national headlines -- again. In October, RIM had global outages that lasted several days.

Verizon customers are hoping the carrier can solve the problem faster than the BlackBerry maker, and in fact the company is reporting progress. But near back-to-back outages are throwing fuel on the consumer outrage fire.

"Verizon Wireless 4G LTE service is returning to normal this morning, after company engineers worked to resolve an issue with the 4G network during the early morning hours today," said Verizon spokeswoman Melanie Ortel. "Throughout this time, 4G LTE customers were able to make voice calls and send and receive text messages. The 3G data network operated normally."

Root Cause Remains Mystery

In April, Verizon experienced outages across the nation that drew the ire of its customers. And in fact Wednesday's issue was Verizon's second outage event in December. Users reported problems with the LTE network in the first week of the month. That outage reportedly left customer without Internet access on their smartphones for about 24 hours.

"A quick Google search shows tons and tons of angry customers without 4G service that just aren't getting answers. I had to spend 45 minutes on the phone last night, first with a tech rep who thought I should just turn it on and off and remove the LTE SIM card, before sending me to someone who knew what he was doing, that essentially did nothing but make me do the same thing . . ." a contributor named "diovino82" wrote on Verizon's 4G LTE Community Forum.

There are hundreds of responses just like that one, yet not much information from Verizon on why the network has seen two major outages in as many weeks and three in the last year. Verizon's LTE network is just 1 year old, and the company is moving to add additional streaming services on top of the new technology, including streaming the NFL Super Bowl to the phones.

Quest for Reliability

"LTE is still a relatively new technology, so it will take some time to mature. But that isn't really any excuse," said Zeus Kerravala, principal analyst at ZK Research. "Verizon is looking to add core services to LTE, including voice, and I suspect they need to get the reliability of 4G to a higher level before they could roll out voice on top of it."

Kerravala makes a strong point. Not only would running voice over LTE put an additional strain on the network, it could be a disaster if the technology is not mature enough to handle it without widespread outages. Although consumers complain about spotty cell coverage, prolonged voice outages are a different story.

"Prolonged periods of outages for voice wouldn't just create inconvenience for customers. They would flee the network if that happened," Kerravala said. "Verizon can't participate in international roaming right now for voice and data. Making the 4G network reliable is extremely important to the future direction of the company."

That's right, if you like a Facebook page, the News Feed will generate a message every time you mention the "liked" brand or business. This shows up your News Feed as well as your friends'.a

They also appear as "Sponsored Stories" on the right column of your Facebook pages, "where you may be more likely to discover new things that your friends are interested in." These work similar to other ads, it seems, except that your name will appear in your friends' feed, to better catch their attention.a

As the video on the sponsored stories Facebook page explains, friends are likely to be at least somewhat more influential than others in money-spending decisions. (Though others may balk at having their friends — or themselves — co-opted for advertising purposes.)a

TechCrunch says that there will be no more than one sponsored story in a News Feed per day, so that should assuage some clamor.a

If, on the other hand, you wish to advertise your own branded page, Facebook will walk you through the steps to create a sponsored story, letting you figure out what your maximum budget will be, based on clicks you expect to get from it. There are several different kinds of sponsored stories, as seen in this guide.a

To add to the argument that these kinds of ads work, there are reports that show click-through rates have gone up. TBG Digital produced the "2011 Global Facebook Advertising Report," which examined 255 billion impressions across 216 clients advertising on Facebook in 192 countries in the third quarter of this year. In that report, there was an 18.5 percent increase in click-through rates across five major markets from the second quarter of this year to the third quarter.a

The report attributes the increased effectiveness of ads to sponsored story ads, based on those click-through rates and the more targeted means of reaching consumers by age, gender and interests.a

Uh oh! It seems that it's not a good day to be a Verizon Wireless user. Based on an overwhelming number of reports in support forums, the cellular provider's customers are experiencing 3G and 4G data outages across the U.S. right now.a

We've reached out to Verizon for more information about the issue and will update this story once we hear back, but in the meantime we're checking on the complaints in Verizon's own support forums. a

Users are reporting trouble maintaining a steady data connection as well as misleading connectivity statuses (some devices are displaying icons which suggest connectivity, but no actual connection occurs). According to the folks at The Verge — who have been keeping track of the origins of the posts — the reports are coming in from "pretty much everywhere" including California, Rhode Island, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Nevada, New Jersey, and New York.a

Kominfo: Tak Ikut Lempar BlackBerry, Bukan Berarti Tak Solider

Jakarta - Kementerian Komunikasi dan Informatika (Kominfo) tak ingin ikut-ikutan dengan rencana aksi pelemparan BlackBerry di depan Kedubes Kanada yang digalang Lembaga Pengembangan dan Pemberdayaan Informasi (LPPMI). Meski tak ikut serta, kementerian yang dipimpin Tifatul Sembiring itu menampik jika dibilang tak solider.

Menurut Kepala Pusat Informasi dan Humas Kementerian Kominfo Gatot S. Dewa Broto, Kominfo memilih cara lain untuk menghadapi Research In Motion (RIM) guna menegakkan aturan di Indonesia. Namun tidak dengan ikut-ikutan aksi pelemparan BlackBerry.

"Namun kalau pejabat Kominfo tidak ikut demo jangan dianggap kami tidak solider. Kami punya mekanisme dan caranya sendiri, tapi tetap tegas. Publik boleh terus memonitornya kok," tukas Gatot, kepada detikINET, Rabu (21/12/2011).

Cara yang masih dijalankan Kominfo ialah tetap lewat jalur negosiasi. Namun Gatot menegaskan jika selanjutnya kemungkinan akan mengambil metode yang lebih dipertajam.

"Selanjutnya tidak lagi cukup duduk berunding, tetapi melakukan fact finding. Benar tidak yang mereka omongin. Jika tidak benar, kasih sanksi," tegasnya.

Lalu apa ini berarti Kominfo selama ini selalu 'menelan' apa yang dikatakan RIM tanpa melakukan verifikasi lebih lanjut? "Bukan berarti seperti itu, sekarang sudah ada (verifikasi) tetapi belum intensif," kilah Gatot.

"Seperti router mereka yang di Singapura, jika RIM terbuka sejak awal, pasti kami periksa. Faktanya media yang tahu duluan dan mereka baru mengaku tanggal 8 Desember 2011," pungkas Gatot.

Sebelumnya, lantaran kecewa dengan sikap RIM yang terkesan melecehkan regulasi di Indonesia, LPPMI merencanakan aksi pelemparan BlackBerry sebagai bentuk protes dalam waktu dekat. Tempatnya kemungkinan besar di Kedutaan Besar Kanada.

"Kita terusik bahwa dengan satu layanan BlackBerry saja kita sebagai bangsa yang besar dikerjain. Kita adalah bangsa besar, ini negeri yang besar jadi jangan main-main," kata Kamilov Sagala, Direktur Eksekutif LPPMI kepada detikINET.

Selain dari masyarakat, aksi ini diharapkan diikuti perwakilan pemerintah. Termasuk Menkominfo Tifatul Sembiring yang diharapkan dapat hadir dan ikut serta.

"Kita dengan aksi ini kan mendukung pemerintah juga. Pak menteri (kominfo Tifatul Sembiring) juga harusnya bisa hadir untuk menunjukkan juga punya rasa nasionalisme yang tinggi," pungkas Kamilov.

The minority investment by IDG-Accel is the first-ever round of venture capital raised by Razer. Funding to date has been contributed by angel investors as well as through Razerâs global operations.

Samarinda - Pemerintah melalui Depkominfo coba menggalakkan program MPLIK (Mobil Pusat Layanan Internet Kecamatan), yakni mobil yang memiliki akses internet. MPLIK menyediakan layanan internet bagi masyarakat pelosok. Termasuk di Kalimantan Timur (Kaltim).

"Mobil pusat layanan internet kecamatan ini berkecepatan akses internet 256 Kpbs. Tapi kecepatan ini akan ditingkatkan menjadi 512 Kbps," kata Kepala Dinas Komunikasi dan Informatika (Diskominfo) Provinsi Kaltim Jauhar Effendy, saat memberikan keterangan pers di kantornya, Jl Basuki Rahmad, Samarinda, Rabu (21/12/2011) siang WITA.

Jauhar mengatakan, Propinsi Kaltim tahun ini mendapat 72 unit mobil MPLIK yang akan disebar di 72 kecamatan dari 136 kecamatan yang ada di 14 Kabupaten dan Kota di Kaltim. Keseluruhan unit MPLIK itu akan dioperasikan paling lambat hingga akhir tahun.

"Kecuali di Kabupaten Kutai Kartanegara yang mendapat 6 unit PLIK, kita belum bisa memberikannya karena belum ada penandatanganan kerjasama," ujar Jauhar.

MPLIK itu akan melayani masyarakat di kecamatan agar melek teknologi internet. Hanya saja Jauhar mengakui, penyebaran unit MPLIK, belum keseluruhannya menyentuh kecamatan terjauh di Kaltim.

"Karena mobilnya sendiri bukan double gardan menembus akses jalan darat yang masih sulit, jadi masih ada yang belum terjangkau unit MPLIK. Tapi ke depan, kecamatan-kecamatan terjauh yang belum dijangkau, akan dijangkau sehingga masyarakat di kecamatan benar-benar melek internet," tambah Jauhar.

Sebagai tahap awal, sambung Jauhar, Pemprov Kaltim memberikan subsidi berupaya pembiayaan honor penggunaan 2 orang instruktur per kecamatan, biaya Rp 1,5 juta untuk sewa bandwith serta pembiayaan Bahan Bakar Minyak (BBM) perunit MPLIK.

"Semua itu ditanggung APBD Kaltim selama 3 bulan selanjutnya ditanggung oleh Pemkab dan Pemkot setempat. Biaya akses internet bagi masyarakat yang menggunakannya cukup murah Rp 2.000 perjam," terang Jauhar.

Pengamatan detikINET, di dalam MPLIK itu tersedia antara lain 2 unit laptop, Wifi Router, Printer serta 1 unit LCD TV Digital, 1 unit parabola serta mesin genset.

"Selain nantinya ada di kantor tiap kecamatan, mobil ini akan mobile ke daerah-daerah di tiap kecamatan itu agar banyak masyarakat yang menikmati layanan internet," tutup Jauhar.

It’s the season of the ‘Top 10 Of Something Something’ articles and the folks at TorrentFreak are not the ones to be left behind.

The torrent news site has named the most pirated TV shows of 2011, baring all and whole how the shows have stacked up to its actual, ‘legal’ viewers.

Showtime’s Dexter has topped the list, gathering 3,620,000 downloads as compared to just 2,190,000 US TV viewers. HBO’s Game of Thrones comes in second, once again garnering more illegal downloads (3,400,000) than actual TV viewers (3,040,000). The Big Bang Theory follows at no. 3 but it’s 15,980,000 viewers easily shrugs of its small illegal downloads figure of 3,090,000.

Surprisingly, illegal TV shows downloads have declined from last year. This is thanks to other modes of ‘distribution’ like Hulu and Netflix. However, viewers outside US still have to wait for a long, long time, sometimes even years, to watch the latest and the greatest the US television has to offer.

Sementara menurut M Ridwan Effendi, anggota BRTI lainnya, 10 nomor shortcode tersebut masih dalam tahap penyidikan berdasarkan aduan dari 1.226 keluhan masyarakat yang masuk.

"Itu adalah 10 nomor paling banyak diadukan masyarakat lewat call center 159, bukan judgment dari BRTI sebagai penyedot pulsa. Evaluasi sedot pulsa masih kita lakukan pada semua CP baik yang terdaftar maupun yang tidak terdaftar di BRTI," tukasnya.

Google's Schmidt Promises Serious iPad Rival

A battle between Google and Apple over the mobile communications market will get brutal next year as the search and operating-system giant launches its own branded device to take on the iPad .

That's what Google CEO Eric Schmidt promises, telling an Italian newspaper that "in the next six months we plan to market a tablet of the highest quality." The comments in Corriere della Serra are widely believed to signal that a tablet based on the pure-Google Nexus phone model is in the works.

'Leading Edge of Google Technology'

There are already dozens of tablets made by other manufacturers that run Google's Android operating system, including Samsung's Galaxy Tab and Motorola's Xoom. Given the increasingly cozy relationship between the Mountain View, Calif.-based company and South Korean electronics giant Samsung, it might be a safe bet that's who is building it.

Samsung just released the Galaxy Nexus, the first to run Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), and its devices are to be the first to get Android updates.

So how would a Nexus tablet be different from a Tab or a Xoom? And how would it stack up against the market king iPad 2?

"The Nexus line defines the leading edge of Google's technology," said Rob Enderle, principal technology analyst at Enderle Group. "This is the fast track to market, but the iPad is defined by user experience, not by technology leadership. "

Enderle said Schmidt's boast reminded him of similar posturing by Palm before the unsuccessful 2010 launch of its Palm Pre phones.

"Google is the master of fast, but to compete successfully with Apple you have to be the master of user experience and both define and deliver a great one," Enderle said. "Google has struggled with that, and simply bringing out a bad, cheap copy of the iPad won't prove to be that successful."

Praise for Steve Jobs

Amazon's success with the Kindle Fire tablet shows an opening for non-iPad tablets, Enderle said, "but the fact that Amazon had to fork Android to do that suggests that Google has to behave differently if they want to be successful here."

In the interview with Milan-based Corriere della Serra, Schmidt also praised his former rival, the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs, as a friend and "the Michelangelo of our time" who "realized the revolutionary potential of the tablet and has created an amazing product like the iPad."

Schmidt's comments come as the rumor mill has been shifting to focus on the third-generation iPad, with current speculation that it would have a smaller screen than the current 9.7-inches, which would make it more portable.

Enderle said it was likely no coincidence that Schmidt's comments, from an interview in New York at Google's new headquarters there, were given to a European publication.

"Apple's weaker in Europe and Google's platform, conversely, is more popular," he said. "It will play better there, so I think this was likely planned."

Terlihat, markas baru Facebook ini memiliki konsep yang tidak jauh berbeda dengan markas yang lama. Agaknya Facebook mengusung konsep bangunan yang homy agar produktivitas dan kreativitas karyawannya tetap terjaga.

Right about now, Research In Motion must be looking for a silver lining in the dark cloud that seems to hang over its head. Headline after headline heralds the woes of the BlackBerry maker.

In recent news, RIM lost 5,000 PlayBook tablets to thieves who stole a truck that was transporting them. The tablets are worth about $1.7 million, according to a report in Forbes. Could a fire sale ala the HP Touchpad be next? PlayBooks have already been selling for as little as $200 as part of holiday shopping promotions and RIM reportedly let its employees buy the devices for just $100 each.

"The PlayBook should have been a standalone device like the iPad . They would have had a chance to sell it to consumers," said Michael Disabato, managing vice president of network and telecom at Gartner . "RIM remains focused on business and they are missing the whole consumer play. By the time they figure that out and develop a device that's going to compete with all the Android and iOS devices it's going to be too late."

Time to Kill BlackBerry?

In even more bad news for RIM, the company's stock is down another 2 percent to $12.60 a share. That's the lowest the stock has dipped in eight years. The dip comes after a 13 percent drop with last week's third-quarter earnings announcement, and another 4.5 percent decline Monday. RIM's market value is now $6.7 billion, which represents a whopping 80 percent loss in 2011.

Some analysts suggest RIM may need to ditch the BlackBerry, while others argue that RIM has to die so that BlackBerry can survive. Meanwhile, co-CEO James Balsille is assuring the markets that he and co-CEO Mike Lazaridis are "leaving no stone unturned and are evaluating a number of areas...."

Balsille ticked off those areas, which include product management, the number of SKUs offered, supply chain and building material cost efficiency, marketing and advertising, partnership and licensing opportunities, and organizational and management structure opportunities to leverage the BlackBerry infrastructure.

Splitting in Two

In one of RIM's latest efforts, the company rolled out BlackBerry Fusion, an enterprise mobility solution that marked its entrance into the multi-platform mobile -device management space. RIM's aim is to win the business of companies and government agencies looking to manage the various mobile devices that workers tote.

But RIM is competing with a slew of established players in the segment, including MobileIron, Sybase and Symantec. And, RIM is reserving some of its most attractive features for BlackBerry users, like push technology, network and data usage efficiency, and behind-the-firewall access to enterprise applications and systems.

"I think RIM is going to split into two functions. One is going to be mobile-device management and the other is going to be handsets," Disabato said. "So RIM is not going to be the RIM you know in a year or two."
